Have had this model since it came out, if you are just looking for a reliable streaming device, $40 is a very good price imo. One thing to note is that it doesn't work with HDMI switches. Bought the Amazon Basics brand switch (you'd assume it would work with the FireTV Cube, right?) but turns out none of the FireTV Cubes work with switches. Their newest model addressed this by adding HDMI passthrough.

If you are looking to do more with this (play your own video files / sideload apps), my thoughts from another topic:
This plus Kodi and RD = pure heaven
You want firmware lower than 7.2.7.3, when you first set up and the device starts updating, you need to disable the internet right away. Finish setting up and check the firmware.

If lower, then you want to disable updates using this :

I went with the 2019 over the newer version because it came with an IR extender (and obviously it was cheaper).

Amazon refurb are usually new devices, just repackaged. Wonder what firmware these are on, such nice devices once you have a custom launcher on them and block updates.

All I really want is an intercom system + a fire tv stick. Will this suffice? Cheers

RD?.. What is that?

I highly recommend this instead of the 4k Max just because of the 16gb ram (12 free after OS load). The USB network adapter is a nice to have. The new cube looks good but this ($40) VS the new cube (on sale $125), I would grab this because I doubt the new cube is $85 better. Heck you could get 3 of these and still be cheaper than the new cube on sale.

I bought one of these a while back and I have had every firestick (I believe) since the first one through the 4k Max and this device has been the best of the lot. In for another one to replace the bedroom 4k max!

Are you saying that because voice commands work in Kodi?

Or do you mean just having them accessible on the device is a nice feature?

If you just want to play videos, the reliability factor makes the FireTV Cube a better choice than a no-name Android TV box imo. To play your own files you'll a player app which I don't think is on the official FireTV app store, so look into how to install Kodi on the FireTV Cube (pretty easy to do, it's basically just getting an App called "Downloader" then entering the url for the .apk file to install Kodi). I guess you could also go with one of the other Android video players like MX Player or VLC but I like Kodi because you can control it from your phone (sometimes easier than using the FireTV remote, like being able to slide the progress bar to an exact place).

If you are looking to install regular Android apps on this, be warned that it is locked down hard. I installed something called Aurora store as a way of accessing the Google Play store but still wasn't able to get a lot of Android apps running (emulators, etc) because I guess the directory that the apps want to create storage where the Cube doesn't allow without root. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. See below if you are thinking of connecting an external hdd to the cube:

It has either a MicroUSB or MiniUSB port in the back where you can connect a full size USB adapter (I think it's included). If you're using it to connect a hard drive, it doesn't support NTFS or exFAT so you're limited to 4GB per file max EEK! I tried sideloading an app called "exFAT/NTFS for USB by Paragon Software" which did work to some degree but was very inconvenient and ultimately my workaround was to enable USB media share on my router and access it by connecting to the router USB share through Kodi.

Yup, There are plenty more capable and hackable devices than this @2GB RAM. The folks who have rooted using an HDMI cable haven't gone far and that project looks dead.
