If you have a single (or a few) large purchases planned, apply yourself for a credit card that has a good sign up bonus, then use the referral bonus with your significant other (assumption based upon having a child) to double up on the bonus. Then it all comes down to how much you're planning to spend as each of these sign up bonuses require you to spend a certain amount of money in the first few months. However, depending on where you are in the planning phase, try to space out the credit card applications by a quarter of a year (at least) if possible so you're not always trying to hit spending limits and the benefits of the cards don't completely overlap.

Really comes down to whose ecosystem you want to be a part of and trying to stick to one. Major ones are Chase, Citi, Capitol One and American Express. Since you mention you already have the Chase (freedom?) unlimited you're already in the Chase system so go with the Sapphire preferred with the bonus 20k points offer to 80k (some in person branches offering 90k) points in sign up bonus and gives an outlet for the Chase ultimate rewards points to multiply in travel. Then maybe pick up a Chase Ink card as well, again to pick up the Chase points to transfer to your Sapphire but again this is all dependent upon how much you're already planning to spend. Don't try to over spend to hit the bonus.
