good price for a 10K unit, but single hose, and also the better representation of cooling capacity (SACC) rates this only as a 7K BTU

For those of you that *must* have a portable unit, this is a decent deal and the Whynter brand single hose options offer decent performance (I used a single hose 12k unit for a handful of years until I replaced the sliding door with a proper window.) However note what Medic said, while dual hoses are marginally better than single hose any time you're using a portable unit rather than a window shaker (or mini split for those with $) you need to size it up quite significantly. If you are deciding between a window unit and a portable, get the window unit while installation is more of a PITA performance will definitely make it worth your while to lift it twice a year.

Agreed, this should never be a long term solution. You can get window units like the one by midea that has variable speed and the efficiency is much better than a standard. If you have the money your can't beat a mini split but the install will cost you unless you diy.

Fyi, I don't recommend using a portable unit in a garage or anything that is extremely "leaky" air wise because portable units create a negative air pressure in the room and hot air will flow in and performance will go way downhill.

One thing people don't discuss often is the noise these units generate. Having the compressor anywhere within earshot is quite the indoor disturbance. Go with a mini split if you can. It's worth the investment.

Single hose in an attached garage is actually better IMO because you can leave the door open and pull cold air from the house in. Less energy efficient still though if that's a concern.

Absolutely true, if your setup that way. My old duplex the garage had no door / window thru to the house.

Yeah, those fans are super loud on max / high. Personally I like the white noise when I sleep.

Unfortunately in our case we do not have windows that are compatible with your normal window AC. I don't want to do mini splits yet because I'd rather do the entire house. But we have a room with no AC at all. I had to buy a cover for the window that we could zip up an attach the hose as well. It's a PIA.
