If you are looking for using this to drain car oil, I suggest you find one that has a 6 or 8 inch screw off top with a grate below it. You want the oil in it, not on it (or at least I do). The gush of oil after removing the drain plug will splatter off the top of this thing and onto the floor. You will also have a huge mess cleaning the drain area up (or I guess you could wait overnight for all of the residual oil to drain into the tiny drain hole). I have one like this and the only thing I have ever used it for is a coolant change, and even then it splattered everywhere.
Mine let's me walk in the back and empty it myself. Advance Auto Parts in where I go.
That may happen to me first time on a given car.
After that I know at what angle to the drain plug screw and hole I need to put the pan. For me this model here works fine.

My previous one was a different much older design, shallower with smaller center hole. It was prone to make some spills.

I used the one here a week ago on a 4.5 qt capacity engine I've worked on for 5 years and the only mess was a bit of oil residue on the pan surface after it drained. That is as designed and a rag fixed that.

Walked by this at Walmart and the top reservoir is so small and shallow. Okay for small jobs or if you happen to have an adjustable rate drain valve on your car. I'll stick to my old round pan even though the drain cap makes a mess anytime you take it off.

Save your money and just get a plastic tub thing from the dollar store. Then use milk jugs/empty oil jugs and pour it into that. These things get nasty and tend to leak.

Here is a question for the group. When you go back to the store to recycle, seems like it is a pita for them (and me) to have them go into the back to empty it out. Staff is always busy at auto parts store. Leaving refilled bottles on the counter and taking off much easier?
O reilly was a pita. sign and all..So went to an autoshop next door and they let me drain the oil myself.

This is great advice. I have used this pan on many, many vehicles and hate it with everything in me. I have tried positioning it every which way, holding it up directly to the drain plug, everything. It ALWAYS splatters. Even if the initial splash doesn't splatter, once the oil starts hitting the "baffles" on the pan, you're getting oil to the face.

And yes, it leaks like everyone else here has stated.

I like the recommendation for the pan with the grate. Sounds much cleaner.

After put the new oil into the motor, I take the empty container and put the old oil into it. I go to O'Reilly Auto Parts and leave it with the associate. They just make my write my name, address, and the amount of oil I'm dropping off.

Put the used oil in the bottles that new oil came in. My AutoZone have a cart ready for them and they just say to leave the bottles on it.

I was going to 'upgrade' my old faithful plain open top drain pan, but decided not to do it after reading your comments. My biggest complaint with the open top drain pan is cleaning up the residual oil on the bottom edge, but I guess it's a common thing for any oil pan.
Would be nice if there is a silicone coated oil pan

After having considered the pros/cons of drain pans as mentioned throughout the thread, I recently made the decision to spend the extra money on this drain pan to hopefully avoid accidental messes and/or messy/timely clean up of the drain pan afterwards.

After the first use where I did the oil and transmission fluid, the elevated neck/pan performed well with no accidental splashes, spills, splatters, etc. to clean up after.

This is the only place I've found this particular model. There are some similar adjustable height options, but this one seemed like the best candidate out of the ones I saw.
Not a slick deal, but figure it might help someone.

This looks great! I just picked one up to try, thanks! My only concern is its clearance on lower vehicles.

Just Bart Simpson the info. Amanda Hugginkiss, Mike Hunt, IP Freely etc.

Would this work to drain differential fluid?

If I remember correctly, the catch pan can also be inserted directly into the drain pan, so the profile of the unit isn't much higher with it attached than without. (it's stored away til next change or i'd confirm 100%) I think I checked that feature also during set up because I was also wondering/concerned about that.

I ended up using one extension arm and rhino ramps on a mid size suv when I used it. I still had another extension arm to add more height if the situation called for it.

The extensions are threaded, so it also allows the heights to be fully adjustable and not just limited to fixed heights of the extension pieces.

The rotatable drain catch attachment also made it easier to position the drain pan for my oil filter change since the filter was near the tire. This set up gave me more flexibility where I could easily adjust/rotate the catcher into place without having to worry about the drain pan's position in relation, where some pans might run into spacing problems with a rhino ramp there.

I stopped DIY oil changes a while ago due to many of the issues mentioned throughout the thread, and decided cheap oil changes from WM were an acceptable alternative.
I decided I wanted to start DIY again to ensure quality control.
I love SDs, but decided the extra money for this model was worth it due to time saved from clean ups.
No regrets with my decision after my first time using it.
Glad to hear you gave it a shot. TU

I have to agree with this and others who complained of the same issue. If you want to see your motor oil jump off a catch pan and right onto the floor, THIS is the pan for you !

The pressure of the oil coming out of the drain pan immediately after the drain plug is removed is just enough on my cars to help it jump off the catch pan. Hated that.

received it today and change oil to test. the claim that it splash was not 100% true (might be different for different vehicle), I raise the vehicle about 2 feet off the ground (from the car oil pan to ground is 2'), let the oil drip to the middle and maybe 1 droplet splash out but that is all, easily wipe out. There are actually 2 holes in the middle of the pan to let the oil goes through (remember to open the air valve), it is enough to drain all the oil and there is no overflown.
I store it upright so far no leak, Im happy with the purchase. Maybe overtime the material deteriorate and leak but I m not going to store those used oil for long, probably will dispose them this weekend.
My car is highlander 2015.

I hate these type pans. Just get a high wall pan with a real funnel drain spout.

Something like this is what you need. No mess, easy to pour into a real oil container.
