EDIT: Apparently Valve screwed up, they were supposed to make Desktop Dungeons free after Rewind came out but made the change before. However, people who get Desktop Dungeons for free will not also get Rewind for free.

But you dont lose all progress every death
The game or the level? The levels are like 5 minutes long and it's basically a puzzle, restarting in the middle or from your last spot would almost always leave the game in an unbeatable state.

Maybe you are running into a bug? The new one had an issue with servers where progress wasn't being saved, whether you won or lost
That being said, I have absolutely no interest in the more 3D looking sequel - mostly because of the viewpoint. I prefer 100% straight top down view, and not at an angle.
