I bought an MFC-L5700DW new on Amazon for $279 in 2019. My wife prints between 20 to 300 pages or more every week for work. We replaced the drum one time and only use Brother ink.
Never had a single issue with it. Not even one paper jam that I'm aware of.

UPDATE: I just checked the page counter. It's 88,493. My 20 to 300 page per week estimate is a little on the low side. It would average to over 400 pages per week.
They r built like a tank and if you get the generic toner, paper becomes the most expensive part of the system.

Any recommendations for a good color laser printer that uses a generic toner?
You may want to download the latest drivers; Brother shows the latest version is dated March 2023. I have a 2685DW and it works great with Windows 10. Here's link for driver download for your 2280DW:

To my knowledge, yes, however that issue can be sidestepped in two ways:

1. Buy a printer that uses the older chipless TN630/TN660 cartridges instead of the newer chipped TN730/TN760 cartridges.

2. In your printer's settings, manually disable firmware updates. This should not be necessary unless your printer is directly connected to the internet. I don't believe that firmware updates can install via a USB connection to a desktop or laptop.
How can I see what models use the old chipless cartridges? Also, dumb question here, but why would I need cartridges if I am using toner? Is toner for blacks only, and cartridges for color?

The Brother monochrome lasers use black toner cartridges; you replace the cartridge instead of pouring toner out of a bottle. On each printer model's product page, there is a tab that says "Supplies and Accessories" that tells you which cartridge that printer uses. The chipless ones will show TN630/TN660 as the cartridge for that printer.

I am not sure what's wrong with mine, if I print something when it's sleeping, it trips power. And I have to go to the main junction box and flip it back.

I tried different plug points and had same result.

Anyone know if my machine is bad?
My 2280 dims the flourescent overhead lights in the small room when it starts up to print. Draws way too much power for a bw printer. I have my cable modem, routers, voip and several other electronics on the same circuit. None of them draw much power and luckily the brother printer hasn't borked them yet.

Mine is plugged into my UPS (backup battery) and does something similar. So, same boat. Not sure if the printer is bad or not.

Laser printers have a heating element (the fuser) used to melt the powder toner onto the paper. When the printer wakes up it needs to quickly heat the fuser. Looking at a few postings around the web it appears those can draw upwards of 1000W. It doesn't do it for long but if you have older wiring in your house (if you lights and outlets are on the same circuit you do have older wiring) or if you have a lot of other things on the same circuit it's not at all surprising this could trip a breaker. Consider that the printer draws about half the power a 15A outlet can provide. If you have something like a space heater plugged into the same circuit or a lamp, a desktop computer, monitor etc you could simply be over drawing the outlet. Fortunately that high power draw is quick. In likely less than 30 seconds (before printing starts) the fuser should be at temperature. On average lasers don't draw too much power but they can during a short warm up load.

See my post above. Lasers draw a lot of power for a short period as they warm up the fuser. Once done their power draw isn't too bad. But if you have a lot on one circuit or older wiring these issues would be understandable and not really a problem with the printer.

It's overwhelmingly reported by buyers that you can't tell these from brand new. The one I bought was A++.

I have an old 7065 Brother network printer.
I turned it into a airprint printer with my Raspberry Pi
I created a $35 Print server with Samba, CUPS and avahi-daemon (Bonjour)
Works great for a 15 yr old cheap printer

Me too. Except . . . well the parts are still sitting there, with the other pi projects I haven't gotten around to LMAO

Not a cheap solution anymore though - They say that regular stock will be back by the 2nd half of 2023 . . .

Bad combination of a cool thing at a decent price and scalpers.
