Actually kind of glad people aren't buying because the unprecedented demand for tech during Covid gave AMD and especially NVIDIA the false impression that people are always willing to pay far more than what they're actually worth.

With dwindling demand for their products, they'll probably think twice about their pricing structure of future product releases (for example, a 3080 having a $700 MSRP and a 4080 having an $1100 MSRP!!!)

I think it's safe to say that these discount prices on tech that just recently released is ushering in a bright future for PC building 😁.

I still find it incredible that the Micro Center deal includes this proc + mobo/ram for only $170 more ($145 if using the $25 new customer coupon).

I, like many, don't live near a Micro Centee, so a deal is only a deal if it "exists", but sheesh: one could buy that combo, turn around and ebay the ram/mobo (if unneeded/undesired) and have a an absolute steal for this processor!!

Yeah I certainly wouldn't have built a new rig, but I was itching to upgrade from my Ryzen 1600af / 980ti rig that I've had for quite some time.

Microcenter is two hours away, but ended up going with a 7900X/Asus B670/32GB Combo (599) and a 6950XT for 599. Wasn't planning on doing both, but they combo'd it with a $25 off new CC signup so I went that route and took the 6 months financing (basically I broke computer into 4 interest free payments this way while my money in savings earns interest).

The value in those Microcenter kits is great and I wanted to upgrade before we move farther away.

Same. I need to buy at or near release to feel like I got my money's worth from a new generation of CPUs. Will take another look once Ryzen 8000 releases, hopefully with reasonable prices.

Microcenter loses money selling components that cheap but makes up for it by getting people in store to buy other overpriced items. It's why you never see deals on anything besides CPU combos at Microcenter and why no one's ever going to pricematch them.

They're also skirting manufacturer set pricing rules by selling them as a "combo", so you can't pin down the specific price of one component.

I'd still be glad to take advantage, but if people were smart, MC would be in bankruptcy.
Your logic is absurd.

How big of a power supply should you have with a CPU like this to be safe?

Top end graphics cards have always carried a hefty price tag though, haven't they? It has been several years since my last build, but I thought $1000-$1500 was the range to expect for the "latest" models.

If anything, unwillingness to pay top price for highest end stuff (which will continue to be needed/desiree for niche applications) goes up as supply will dwindle to meet dwindling demand, but the engineering effort and tooling to create such products will remain exactly the same (or increase with wage increases). Either that, or the time between releases will extend os new cards aren't being released as often.
No they haven't. A 4080 isn't really top end. Maybe a 4090, but even that is a stretch. The fact that AMD can get near 4080 performance for 200 dollars less and be profitable speaks volumes about nvidias price gouging. Mind you nvidia is a graphics dedicated company (so they should be able to invent products with better performance and at a lower price than the competitor).

It isnt a coincidence that their 40 series cards are over 20-30% more than their 30 series cards once they saw how much people paid scalpers a 3080 was going for almost 2k at one point). Nvidias profit margins are insanely high now.

FYI, their customers expect a range of 300-1k for their GPUs (except for the 90 cards). If AMD can still be profitable selling this entirely new CPU ARCHITECTURE AT 20% or more of a discount than their previous gen and still be profitable, NVIDIA definitely can too; but they chose to hold supply instead.

The fact that customers are voting w/ their wallets by showing their disapproval and not buying the newly released products that offer no value compared to last gen while costing more is the reality check that these megacorps/manufacturers need to bring them down to and stop being so out of touch w/ what the average consumer can afford. And I don't wanna hear no more excuses of inflation from them neither b/c they never had that same energy during COVID when they imposed those egregious, greedy price hikes and sowed illusions of scarcity and lack of availability when they now currently have overstock of last gen products still in their inventory.

they simply adopt a similar marketing strategy to that of any other grocery store. Place a couple loss leaders to incentivize going and shopping in store. Nothing unusual or odd about that they just have the ability to do so because they are a B&M store. BB can price match MC in fact folks do it all the time with CPUs. Also while the best deals are typically on cpu/mobo combos thats not always true in fact most often than not the motherboards are not well priced at all (but going in store you can find great deals on open box boards). they also take a hit on 3d printers, videocards and other items to incentivize buyers not just CPUs.
this is speaking from my experience living next to a MC for the past 20 years.
