If you get a tool from Costco which includes the battery, you get much more generius battery warranty, and battery warranty claims are pretty much always covered with a new replacement battery.
I have both battery. Yuu could mod the tool or battery. I choose to mod the batteries, simple remove the batteries from the case, make the since cut and grind a section away. Plenty of video to do this.

Costco has the 80v chainsaw with 4ah battery and charger for $299.

Pretty good deal as you get the saw and charger with the battery. Not a slick deal rally but the saw sure is handy for small jobs.

Tempted to get for the Kobalt 80V line I'm in. I'm just unsure if the modifications needed to the housing or tool (due to manufacturer's forced incompatibility), compromise the stability of battery seating. It probably varies from tool to tool and probably isn't worth the risk for me.

I understand all of that, but thanks for the feedback. My concern is compromising the stability of the battery seating in the tool. I've asked this question before and was told that stability could be compromised somewhat for some tools, so I hesitate to take the plunge because I have a few 2.5Ah batteries already.
Several years ago, I modified some Porter cable batteries for B&D tools and it worked just fine. These are just pricier and more substantial so it seems riskier. I don't want a battery loosely shifting around or disengaging and dropping.

Mine is at least 3 years old now and never had any issue. You actually not cut into the inside, more or less shave some off. But you have to decide.

BTW this is a good deal for the 4ah battery. Rarely this cheap.

Owning 6 GW 80V tools, some for as long as 4-5 years I have a few comments. First, I've had poor luck with the 2.0Ah batteries, especially in high amp tools like the mower and snow blower. I've had to replace about 4 so far under warranty. The price on the 4Ah batteries is good, but I bought the Costco 80V mower with two 4Ah batteries and an 8 year warranty, so if and when they die, I'm covered.

The 80V string trimmer is the older model, the same as I have. It is very hard to control the speed with the trigger, it wants to go too slow or too fast. A friend has the later model, and it has an off/on power button and also a low and high speed/power setting separate from the trigger. His is much easier to control and more pleasant to use. If this were the new model, I'd buy it and sell the old one. I have a few accessories for the trimmer, and they are handy (steel blade edger, hedge trimmer, cultivator).

Costco also sells a GW 80V string trimmer, but it is not the attachment capable model. It does have the extended Costco warranty and the last I looked it was $199 with a 2Ah battery and charger. If you don't need the attachments, that's a better deal just for the 8 year warranty.

Thanks. I might take the plunge. I suspect a few minutes with a rotary tool is all it takes. I have mower, string trimmer, edger, blower, and snow "shovel," so adding a 4Ah would be useful.

Just recently picked upped the Costco GW Lawn mower and the 4ah+2ah combo is not cutting it. Thanks for the post OP, I'll give the additional 4ah a shot. Just hoping they send the updated 4ah battery that is shorter rather than the long one that is pictured. Guessing the long one is using 18650 cells VS 21700 in the shorter. I'm not sure they are using 21700, I'm just guessing they are due to compact casing.

The Greenworks 80V tools at Costco with battery bundled are very good deal. If you subtract the cost for the battery, the tools are dirt cheap. Also, you get 8 years of warranty. If you just need battery, then this deal is cheaper than the 2-pk deal at Costco. For people that got 80V MasterForce power tools, this battery is fully compatible. If you have Kobalt tools, you need to modify the plastic case.

Is the costco 21in greenworks mower with batteries actually shipping with a 4ah and 2ah battery now? I bought it last year at the end of the season for 450 and while the listing said a 4ah and 2ah battery it actually came with 2x 4ah batteries.

I got the Costco kit with the two 4ah.

What I like to do is only put one battery in the mower at a time. Then when I run that down I pop it in the charger and put the fresh one in the mower to keep going.

To date I haven't run both all the way down. It's nice this way though because the discharged one is almost finished by the time I'm finished up.

I bet the 2ah from gw is similar to ego in that high draw items drop the voltage too much. So something like a string trimmer is perfect but a mower or chainsaw is too much for it and runs out down really fast.

Also I don't have anything to back this up but with the non attachment version the motor and everything are one unit in the head of the spindle. Only thing that goes up the shaft is the power cable. With the attachment compatible one I have heard it isn't as durable because it has the motor and battery at the top with a long skinny drive train that goes clear down the shaft to the toolhead. This design also means it's going to be very backheavy so you will be fighting to keep the head down more.

If you really don't need the attachments I would get the weed wacker only model. I personally have it and it's legit.
