Using a good quality, semi-automatic dual boiler, such as an E61 machine, you can definitely make espresso that's as good as the best cafe. I pour my wife a cappuccino with a flower on top every morning. But I took a class and learned the process. Now that I know it, I don't have to think very much, I just weigh, grind, tamp, put the cup on a scale, start the shot, pour some milk, steam it, check the shot timer, stop the shot, stop the milk steaming, wipe the steam wand, dump the grounds from the portafilter, then pour the milk. I can type that all from memory cause I do that every morning. I also buy my coffee from a local roaster and I make sure the beans were roasted 5 to 21 days ago.
See? Your choice. You can take all of those steps and make perfect quality drinks, or you can go for a step down... but anyone in your household just pushes a button and gets a drink.

Caved last month and got it for full price...called William Sonoma and asked if they can price match my existing purchase..nope.
So I bought one from Crate & Barrel on sale (WS didn't have any black truffle in stock in store) and returned that one to William sonoma next door...
win win.
