These are awesome speakers. I use them as 2.0 set up and still sounds good

That color looks hideous though.

Got the Bro8s and they've been exceptional for the price. If you have a quality subwoofer, the bookshelf speakers are all you would need. They've very neutral and really let the characteristics of the amp shine through

For only music, or home theater as well?

Shouldn't amps have no characteristics? I understand some like a warmer or more detailed sound. I know room acoustics may come into play. But, I would think having neutral speakers and amps would be the goal so that the characteristics of the source comes through whether that is music or home theater.

I have been in this hobby for quite some time now and can tell you that every single component from the dac to your preamp to Poweramp or one integrated amp to another all can sound different on different speakers. Neutral speakers and components is the goal but you may not like the combo.

Hmm, apparently the price is only good when using the SD affiliate URL. Otherwise $399

I have these in one room and $2,000 b&w 706 s2's in another room. These aren't quite as good as the b&W's but they really are exceptional values. Very nice and clear. Highs without sibilance. They are not the best looking speakers in the world. The color on the pair in this listing looks pretty but ugly also. One thing I like about these speakers is they are front ported so you can put them next to a wall if you need to. Many rear ported speakers need more space to breathe. I'm not as impressed with their little brother BR02'S I think the bass is weaker than it should be on the little guys and they are much inferior to other speakers like B&W 607.

But these BR03s are great and the matching BRC center is good as well. They are on the bigger side for bookshelves so make sure you measure. And make sure you don't pick an ugly color.

I am currently listening to this model on a my old semi-retired Denon at work, they sound great. I bought the darker colored cabinets though, I do not dig this color.

The color is interesting. It looks like you're looking at a black and white photo of speakers.

Music and home theater benefit from accuracy the same. There is no different requirement for either.

unfortunately, neutral isn't want most people like. A simple example is that people "like" the sound of tube amplifiers, but they are anything but neutral when compared to a transistor based class AB amplifier.

What sounds good to people doesn't really line up with perfect distortion free amplification.

This is sort of a silly question - but I see various bookshelf speakers on slickdeals with a wide range of prices.

Many of these brands arent sold at major stores, like i can't just go to bestbuy and listen to them.

How does anyone sort of compare the sound? For example, I have the Yamaha NS6490 which I feel are fantastic, but my reference is the tiny speakers on my TV. Specs wise, the speakers are close, but they all are - they go down to the 40hz, up to 22khz. One has larger woofer, is a 3-way design in a sealed box, the other has a slightly smaller woofer but with an open/ported design.

In the end, do I just buy a bunch, try them, then return? Seems...unethical.

I have owned 22 different loudspeakers in the past 5+ years. Don't judge me, it's a hobby Wink

All of them were bought blindly without hearing them first because they are not available at Best Buy or any brick and mortar store.

But really the fun is getting to experience hearing my favorite music through different equipment so I don't view it as a chore.

If you find a good price on sale from a retailer or on the second hand market, you can likely sell them without losing much, if any money.

A few were bought from retailers with generous return policies so you're not doing anything wrong if you return them. But most I sold myself on the used market (craigslist, FB marketplace, forums).
