This is because XC line (2.0, 3.0, 5.0) use different cells from HD line (6.0, 8.0, 12.0). This may not make much difference on lighter duty tools but take a miter saw, table saw or even fuel skill saw and you will immediately see the difference. XC line will overheat and drop charge sharply after only few consecutive cuts while HD battery will keep going and going and discharge in a linear manner.
Yes, HD line is much more per mAh but there's a reason for it.
Your use may not warrant the upgrade.

I'm in the market for couple extra batteries - great deal with the impact. Looks like hack doesn't work online any more? Have to return in the store? Or is there a way to cancel individual items?
Either way, repped.

If you need batteries, I'd get this deal: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwa.../320326862

You get two 5.0 batteries and charger, the hard case, the gen 4 hammer drill, and a free 5.0 battery. Return the free 5.0 battery, and you still have the drill, case, charger, and two 5.0 batteries for less than $200.

I did this or something very similar in December. I have tons of 5.0s, they don't last long enough in HD tools (sawzalls, fuel skill saws, grinders or any lawn equipment). I have few 12.0s, they work great with heavier tools but 6.0 is a sweet spot for lighter tools for me.

I am holding out for the Hack deal they had on https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwa.../320326787 with the free battery. It brought the combo down to $259. Crossing my fingers for Father's day.

Looks like it's delivery only for the batteries even though local stores have plenty of stock.

The cost vs output doesn't make much sense, unless I've missed out on a 6.0 deal. The 5.0 batteries can regularly be had for around $30 in a situation like this hammer drill deal, but I guess you need to need the hammerdrill.

I would much rather have 2 5.0 batteries than a 6.0, but the 6.0 cost so much more. I have probably 10 of the 5.0's and I have 2 8.0's for the yard equipment. I can whack and edge an entire acre of yard with a ton of trees on a single 8.0 battery.

I've been doing these "hacks" for the last couple of years and this is the first time I've seen this.

Guessing HD is sick of the purchase-then-never-pick-up that's so common, and wants you in store to buy both items (and hopefully more), or is counting on some people to just never return the unwanted item once they have it delivered and in their home.

Absolutely love my M12 Hatchet! Just used it again last night to clean up more dead 2-5" branches - it wasn't cheap but I have no regrets paying what I did (~$160).

Seconding this. Similar applies to the M12 lineup - the newer HO CP 2.5 & XC 5.0 batteries are more expensive because the cells are selected specifically to be able to supply higher amperage on demand. I still prefer & use mainly the CP 2.0 and the XC 6.0 though.

I've done it twice the last few months (returning an HO 2.5 and 5.0 batteries I got with my impact/hammer drill set & the right angle grinder), I'm kind of afraid if I keep doing it they're going to ban me from returning stuff lol

HD reported its biggest revenue miss in 20 years, and slashed sales projection for 2023. So expect them to start providing more discounts for the rest of 2023. I just got a $300 cordless car polisher a week ago, still in the box, I am debating whether to keep or return it.

2 separate hacks on 1/2" hammer drill and another on 1/4" impact driver, comes out to $200 + tax. Seems to be a great deal if you don't already have these tools. Not sure if these are the older models.
