Denon AVRs support Audyssey, which is Denon + Marantz's room audio correction system. There are 2 different levels, Audyssey XT and XT32, with XT32 being the higher level. This is baked into the AVR, so it cannot be upgraded. It's definitely worth running, to see if the acoustics of your particular room can be taken into account. It can be switched on and off if you hate the results. The higher end models allow for 2 different calibrations to be stored in the AVR, so you can switch quickly between the 2.
In addition to the Audyssey calibration you perform through the AVR's UI, there is also an app, MultEQ, available on both Apple and Android. This is $20. It allows for a much higher degree of customization than the AVR alone. It probably is worth buying if you want to tweak the settings more reliably.
On top of that, there is a Windows app, MultEQ-X. This is a fair investment @ $199, though sometimes it goes on sale for $149. This allows a ton of customization. For example, with newer models, you can re-run a calibration just for a single speaker if you change it or even move it to a different location. This price is far cheaper than any of the DIRAC add-ons that are available for the higher-level AVRs.
Very importantly, the computer app is LOCKED to a specific AVR, and your Microsoft userid. So you cannot transfer it to another Denon when you upgrade. You cannot move it from your userid to another. It requires another purchase. The phone app is not locked and you may use it with any AVR.
The best tip I learned, after it was too late for me, is if you choose to purchase MultEQ-X, is to create a specific Microsoft userid JUST for that app and AVR. That way, when you sell it, you can throw that in as a carrot.
Hope this is useful for some here.

Basically Dirac splits it's RC algorithms for loudspeakers(Dirac Live) & subwoofers(DLBC).
Right now they only offer Dirac Live, sometime next year they will offer DLBC RC for Denon/Marantz.
For reference on my 4800h this was what I setup and discovered it didn't work as expected:
I configured it as a 7.1 (Bi-Amp) output with the Top Height Speakers selected so it gave me the guidelines for connecting all the speakers and devices correctly. UNFORTUNATELY (and as expected for a 9 channel amplifier), it will switch between the HEIGHT 1 Speakers and the SURROUND BACK depending on content!
Examples:
- If i'm providing a 7.1 signal only, it will activate the surround back and disable the front height speakers
- If i'm providing a Spatial Signal (DTS:X, Dolby Atmos), it will disable the Surround Back Left / Right channels giving me 5.1 + Height + Front Bi-Amp speakers.
- And MIX the SBR/SBL signals in to the SR and SL channels (so in a 7.1 signal will only come out of those 2 channels).
- If set a stereo source (i.e. Music) to:
- Stereo: Only Front L/R
- Dolby Surround: Top Speakers are prioritized. SBR/SBL are disabled.
- DTS: Neural X : Top Speakers are prioritized. SBR/SBL are disabled.
- Auro 3D: Top Speakers are prioritized. SBR/SBL are disabled.
- Auro 2D Surround: SBR/SBL are prioritized. Top Speakers are disabled.
- Multi-Channel Stereo: SBR/SBL are prioritized. Top Speakers are disabled.
- Rock Arena: Top Speakers are prioritized. SBR/SBL are disabled.
- Jazz Club: Top Speakers are prioritized. SBR/SBL are disabled.
- Matrix: Top Speakers are prioritized. SBR/SBL are disabled.
So I've tried adding a separate receiver and using only the pre-outs on the Top Ceiling speakers, however the software will not change the Amp Assign function and I'm still stuck with the same functionality 5.2.2 or 7.2 even if I put the ceiling speakers into an external amplifier, the 7.1 bi-amp configuration does not work. There needs to a 9.1 (Bi-Amp configuration) where the height speakers can be powered by an external amplifier, which I emailed Denon but they said they would not support it. Only a the 11 channel receivers support that configuration such as the 6500/6700 and SR8015. There is likely a 6800h coming by the end of the year as well.
Of course I now run it as a 9.2.2 and disabled the bi-amping feature so all my speakers work in all signals and configurations.

This should help to understand what configurations the 4800 can do.

"You can connect speakers for up to 9-channels for MAIN ZONE. When you connect speakers for 8 or more channels, the output speakers automatically switch according to the input signal and sound mode."
Basically if i give it a Dolby Atmos signal, the 4800 disables my 7.1 surround and switches to a 5.1.2 configuration in "Bi-Amp" mode. There is no way to add external amplification to get it to operate in a 7.1.2 (bi-amp) mode even though its a 11 channel processor and 9 channel ampliifer.

That paragraph nor the configuration page ever imply that a "7.1.2(bi amp)" is possible with 9 or 11channels.
If you are using external amplification, I'm not sure there is any real benefit to bi amp anyways, which is a good thing for you.
You could sell it and go with the 6700 or 8015 but you do lose Dirac option with both.
