The only reason to build a bench now is to challenge yourself to do it, or you have a custom need.
I wouldn't consider better quality to be a custom need. Plenty of people on lumberjacks, sawmillcreek, etc. build their own workbenches because they want a well-designed bench made of quality materials, but can't or don't want to pay several thousand dollars for one.

By contrast, most mass-produced workbenches (including this HF one) are made of unknown timbers; have rudimentary and relatively thin, face-grain tops; have little heft; aren't well supported or joined; and lack many design elements that would be relevant to a skilled woodworker. That's not to say that this workbench isn't well priced for what it is, though. Even a beginning woodworker is probably better served by this than something they'd slap together out of Home Depot plywood and soft pine.

No.

A creator/maker that just has CNC machines and make things from wood might... but they're not "Woodworkers".
I inherited/modified mine from my grandfather. I'm pretty good at a dovetail, and other joinery. I did t know the workbench was the lightsaber/Jedi equivalent for the woodworker: you must make your own.

Man, what even is this reply.
The assembly of mine was the worst experience I've ever had in the history of my short 37 years on this earth. None of the holes lined up as they should. It was a huge pita to put this thing together.

Why would a woodworker buy something like this when they could make one over the weekend spending only $250 in parts and materials?

Because the one they make would, theoretically anyways, be much higher quality than this cheap Harbor Freight option.

No.... NO!!! STOP IT!!!! Fellow SD'ers even if this were $20, it would not be a slick deal.

This is the worst thing ever sold in all of human history!

Shame on you!!!

Monster!!!
I bought this bench a few years back when it was 119, Its solid and it has held up great! I mounted an anvil on the left side, and I often pound metal on it, and the bench is as solid as the day i built it. I do recall there being 2 SKU numbers for this table, one had better wood than the other, I dont remember any more details unfortunately

Of course, we do!
Sometimes you find a deal that will be cheaper than you buying the parts and making the thing yourself.
At times what you buy might also be better than what you would make yourself or take a lot of time that you do not have.

I bought this last year with one of the 25% coupons. It's good quality, no complaints whatsoever. Mine was easy to assemble.

If you search YouTube you can find some really good tips for modding this workbench to make it better. I picked it up a few years ago for under 90 bucks with a coupon.

Many would refer to build. Partially because that project is right up their alley. And partially to have exactly what they want - sturdy design, thick 4-6" top, perfect height for their use (it varies by task), the vise styles and other work holding that works for the tasks they do, the vise quality they want, possibly a tool well if they are into that. Benches are especially important for hand tool woodworkers.

Kind of recently became a woodworker recently due to "inheriting" two workbenches from a commercial property I bought recently. I had to disassemble them and reassemble them and learned a lot in the process of how they are built. They are like tanks built out of 2x6 prime wood with casters on them My miter saw will be here tomorrow. Woodworking is fun, it's nice to be able to do the stuff yourself and not rely on flaky people to do work for you.

"it's nice to be able to do the stuff yourself and not rely on flaky people to do work for you."...

I could not agree more with all of that quoted text.

I'm fortunate enough to have a pretty good skill set when it comes to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and even HVAC. Am I pro? No. However, can I repair or build to code whatever might be needed? Sure. Any recent shortcomings stopping me from DIYing whatever is due to time and my physical ability, after sustaining a pretty bad back injury a few years ago, my body is cooperating less and less, the older I get.

Somewhat recently we did a substantial remodel on one of our homes, and let me say, I have never tried so hard to give people money in exchange for their skilled services as I did during that remodel.

Every contractor or building trades worker wouldn't show up after they were hired, or if they did, never 2 days in a row. It took months to find people that wanted more work than a day's labor.

The only bonus was I ended up saving tens of thousands of dollars doing much of it myself, as my body would permit, while trying to find non-flakey trades workers.

Youtube has been my friend over the years teaching me how to do things as well as my retired engineer neighbor who has a full on wood shop in his basement that has taught me a lot over the years. I want to learn more about plumbing and electrical so I can do that also. I am currently dealing with a guy who is a contractor whose family literally owns the building next to mine and we gave him thousands of dollars to do work and buy materials, even a key to store stuff in one of the units and we are going on 3 weeks now and zero done, no materials bought, just constant excuses. Told him either he has something done by tomorrow or have our money on Tuesday or we go after him for it. Right next door and still no shame. The professional companies like electricians and roofers, they always show up, might cost a little more but they show up, the fly by night guys I swear get enough money to go to the bar or strip club until they run out and then show back up again. Just the worst.
