Lead Acid batteries, even at $500 this is over priced. Also, I'm a Ryobi fanboy but sometimes you have to spit facts.

As in that's what it's worth OR it's been on sale at that price?

These are AGM batteries, around $200 a pop, not your run-of-the-mill lead batteries (and there are four of them). The weight of these batteries actually stabilizes the mower giving it more heft/inertia. What I question is the wisdom of buying a 30" riding mower, I would assume it still has a niche use, but what you want is either a 38" or a 42" to be efficient.

I have the lead-acid ZTR 42" mower- it's not that bad. After 3 years I just had to replace the batteries. They're basically motorcycle batteries and there were 4 of them. Cost around $400 and they were easy to replace. I did upgrade from 75ah to 100ah too (just had to cut a long bolt in the battery compartment and that let the bigger batteries fit just fine). I guess people with golf carts have to go through the same hassle.

Other than that, the mower has been flawless. They do have the new line that is all lithium + you get a full set of yard tools for free, but they're in the $5000-$6000 range EEK! That's nearly twice what I paid for my mower---at battery replacements every 3 years the price difference is no where near worth it.

It's been $600 before?!? :-o
I have a 1/2 acre of very landscaped yard, this small deck would be great for this. But not at this price. For $600 I'd have attempted it.

I'm surprised lead acid only gets you 3 years. You top up the batteries during off season and store them inside and all that? I'd have thought twice that duration. Hmmm.

If you have a battery store near you they'll actually give you money back for the cores and give you refurb batteries. My 4 battery set was closer to $400 after everything was said and done.

It says right on the mower to keep it on the charger when not in use- which I do. We part it in the garage right next to the charger and plug it in when we're done.

The batteries were still usable, but we have a big yard and would use about 70% of the capacity. With battery fade we were getting to the point where we could do 2/3 of the yard, would have to charge again for an hour, and then we could finish.

The 100ah upgrade we did should help with that too Smilie

After 1 1/2 years of intense use, both summer and winter (with an aftermarket snowplow), while keeping them into the charger when not in use, mine (in a 38" mower) are not far from the performance of new ones. Yes, if I pull a trailer or don't clean the debris that rubs against blades' axles I'll get less runtime. But (knock on wood) I don't see a need to replace the batteries in the immediate future.

Also, I keep the mower away from rain and generally water to protect electronic circuitry. By the same token, I will not gamble with used batteries in it. When the time comes, I might upgrade to LiFePO4, but not yet.

Sorry but at this price it's still too expensive you can get a gas style for much less and never have those expensive battery issues
