People spam claims on this, then conflate Grey market (you can activate to your account and download from Microsoft) with the legit pirated keys you can only use with pre cracked software.
Grey market = legit software compatible keys acquired through unknown or shady means. Pirated keys are not compatible with genuine, non modified software.
There are SOME cases in software wherein a Grey market key is risky. But those cases involve subscribed services rather than one time purchases. Some MMO video games for example will check and invalidate accounts that buy oem and other regions, but Microsoft doesn't do this.
I've dealt with Grey market keys before. There was a subreddit community dedicated to trading OEM (purchased from cheaper regions, or acquired via software Dev distributions) Microsoft keys called "microsoftsoftwareswap" that had functional keys. If you didn't haggle at all, the pro versions were usually about $60, way back archive shows this.
But the thing is, the DIY pirating with windows is no longer irrelevant since Microsoft went the winrar approach of never actually invalidating non registered windows. People who don't want to pay can simply deal with a "non activated" memo on their desktop wallpaper and still enjoy windows updates without worry of viruses, and without paying the $2.35 for a pirated windows key.

The only solution that actually works is to create an additional local account, but that comes with it's own headaches.

Then I bought another during next woot sale because I was building a PC. After a month, I tried to use code a last Friday and kept failing. I contacted customer service, and they refunded. Yeah so hit or miss, but Woot is legit company so I don't think its like those other companies that sell for like $3. I've had a similar experience buying OEM key straight from Newegg ($100) a while back and was a pain to get another key. But either way, just sharing. Never had issues getting actual DVD with printed key. Buying online digital key is so iffy full price or discount.
