FYI... depending on which Garmin watch you have, you may want to check your latest watch firmware to make sure some of the features that this pod does aren't now supported with purely wrist based hardware. I know my Garmin Forerunner 955 just recently got all that about 2 weeks ago without the need for a pod.
So did the Forerunner 945 LTE.

"Watches Compatible With Wrist-Based Running Dynamics

The following watches will support wrist-based running power to calculate five running form metrics without the use of a running dynamics accessory. For all six running form metrics, you must pair your watch with an HRM-Pro series accessory or other running dynamics accessory that measures torso movement. For information on wrist-based running power, see your owner's manual.

NOTE: Ground contact time balance is available only with a compatible running dynamics accessory.

I'd respectfully suggest everyone discuss with a professional (doctor or physical therapist) before giving up anything. Particularly doctors and physical therapists that have a running background.

I wonder just how accurate is this compared to something like a Stryd pod?
Kind of two different animals. For the metrics they measure in common, the accuracy is similar. Stryd is all about running with power, which is a relatively new concept as applied to running (it's been used for cycling for ages).

Both footpods will fairly accurately track distance on a treadmill once calibrated. The Garmin one is calibrated more or less automatically once you use it for a run outside.

I got one of these to see if it would help gets "steps" for lawn mowing because with a standard push mower you don't get the swing of the wrist. So far I think that lawn mowing just wasn't that many steps and my Fenix was tracking them just fine. :/

i heard stories of mowing to ankle or put in the pocket, but I really just wanted to leave the watch on my wrist.

Also a runner and I heard that if you already have an optical HRM you can use this in lieu of the HRM Run strap.

I saw a great article that broke this down, basically more detail on what you've said. (but I can't find it quickly)

I find that the Garmin unit is easier to use if you were between the two. I never got the Stryd quite right to stop duplicate posts to Strava and used it for years before someone told me I had it upside down. Apparently Stryd has an "air hole"???

I think for most, unless you're all in on running with power, this is perfect. It's also Bluetooth, not ANT, so it should work for say, an ipad running Zwift.

The airhole is so Stryd can calculate things like head/tailwind iirc for more accurate power calculations.

You are right, to each its own based on its physical ability/longevity and having a medical opinion is key.

but he is not wrong either. for most regular people above 40 ( read not really active and slightly overweight), I would recommend to replace running by 1h+ active walk (or paced swimming) daily plus weight training as the most efficient way to maintain muscles and stay fit. An hour of active walk / swimming a day is no slouch and requires commitment. I would avoid HIIT as well and do limited cardio in the beginning as well (it sounds crazy but people tend to overdo cardio when their body is not ready for it). I am speaking as a previously hardcore cross fit guy who wants to be able to play tennis or basket ball with his kids as long as possible. I am not a doctor or an expert just a pragmatic and realistic person.

Even serious runners aren't going to really care about these added metrics.

And if you have an HRM-TRI or HRM-PRO it's the same metrics added.

Actually I just checked DC rainmaker. This doesn't do pace, just running dynamics. So that makes it even less comparable with Stryd or even a normal Garmin footpod.

I happen to luck out a couple years ago when I switched physicians. He had run the Boston Marathon and was still running despite getting older. Had some questions as I was undertaking my own running training. Very insightful. Best advice he gave me - listen to your body.

I was doing Insanity Max 30 while playing in an Over 30 soccer league and developed bruises on my quads by my knees. This year, I planned it so now I'm wrapping up P90X3 and moving onto Body Beast (since it is largely no impact) during soccer. It was really hard to spend most of last summer season just doing yoga and the low impact modifiers simply because my body said I had gone beyond my limit.

No need for this.

I use the Garmin watch. Sometimes I got lazy and use Strata, which you can import to your Garmin website too.

Some of the Garmin heart rate strap have the running dynamics in it too, just saying.

I got one of their footpods years ago for a similar step-tracking issue while on my treadmill desk but it didn't help. I even contacted support over it and they told me that the steps metric on my watch (Fenix 5x plus) was only measured by the watch and no accessories would ever update that number. I looked into this run pod a while later and I think it was the same story. May be different for other models of watch, but I kinda doubt it.

I stand corrected; other injuries are more common in aging runners, like achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, iliotibial band strain and shin splints, none of which is a laughing matter. I know a few solid cyclists in their late 60's and early 70's who transitioned from running to cycling due to injuries in their 50's after decades of competitive running. I'm just suggesting that aging runners monitor their bodies and make the switch before too much damage occurs.

I know it's not the right thread, but can someone suggest something smaller build for sleep tracking ? I've a Fenix 6x pro but sleeping with that on is a challenge!

Check dcrainmaker, he does a great breakdown on sizes when he does his reviews.
