No, its like Starcraft or Age of Empires or Command and Conquer. The games all have different mechanics but the idea is the same. You control a base and units and either play online or against AI in a campaign.

Oh, that's incredibly boring. Thanks for educating me.

Why would anyone play this when there are plenty of free games like it, like League of Legends?

Haha depends on what you want. Some people want a campaign and to build a base and command units they produced in a historical or sci fi setting. I love playing campaigns but also playing online with AoE4. Theres just something about building up properly and then outsmarting your opponent. I play DOTA2 and love it but its a different type of game and strategy. You dont have an army.

Cool, cool. But one caveat. Contrary to its name, it's nothing like WoW. Which is why I said it's boring.

Those are MOBAs, a specialized derivative of this subset of RTS. MOBAs can be played within wc3, but not vice versa.
Wc3 got a cult following for taking the RTS genre but adding unique mechanics (RPG elements, hero units) and an all encompassing map editor that spawned extremely creative custom games, from MOBAs, to tower defense, to Mario party style party games (Uther party), survival team games, and all sorts of various sorts of genre defying hybrids.
They even made a first person POV race car game within the editor (it didn't work great, but worked well enough to show off the potential).
At this point in time blizz pissed off a lot of the creative types and threw them off with the lazy remaster (and lack of any effort to fix/update mechanics with the og, beyond some graphic upgrades), but there was a reason the og became so influential.

LOL and dota are live action team matches, all pvp
this games pvp is only 1v1 like starcraft where you build bases and have a fog of war, and a lot of people like me only want the 1player campaign anyway
as a longtime wow player, i got it because the campaign narrates the lore of events that lead right up to the launch of vanilla wow, the origins of lordaeron and the undead forsaken race etc...
