You tap them to change between the static colors but the last mode you can tap into is a rainbow mode where it automatically fades through all the colors. That mode is not that good though. It fades between all the colors but when it gets through the cycle it fades off for half a second before starting again.

That's not to say the light isn't great for young babies/toddlers. My son is 10 months old and LOVES bopping these/watching the color change and chewing on them. We have the Octopus, Dino, and Unicorn. I usually rotate 2 as toys and 1 stays plugged in as a night light.

These are fun and worth $10, we got the dino previously. They're squishy and fun to bop to change the color, but if you're going to use it as a nightlight I think it's far too bright on any color except red. It does auto shut off when on battery (not sure exactly how long) but will stay on indefinitely when plugged in.
