My Blackstone does not have an enamel coated cook surface.
In the beginning I wish it did …. but would worry about the longevity of
the enamel with using steel tools.

I don't think you will want an enamel coated surface. A nice seasoned steel cooking surface is practically impossible to screw up and if it ever gets rusted or whatever you can just grind it down and start over. That enamel will likely chip off and you will be left with a useless surface.

Enameled coated flat tops aren't a new thing. It's pretty much all that's used in European consumer-grade "Planchas" and cast iron products.

Look at companies like Le Creuset and Staub who provide lifetime warranties on the enamel on their griddles, and are pretty much well known for being a buy-it-for-life kinda product, compared to Blackstone-style griddles that seem to rust if you look at it wrong, leaving them on the heap of rusted-out Facebook Marketplace listings from people who found them too high-maintenance.

People score great deals on cast iron and carbon steel all the time because morons don't know how to care for it. Blackstone griddles are perfect - even completely encapsulated in rust, a little scrubbing will bring it right back to new, and it can be seasoned and used properly to last forever.

The enameled cast iron, however - needs to be handled with kit gloves in terms of how you clean it and what utensils you use on it. Great for a dutch oven where you're going to braise food in liquids at moderate temperatures for hours on end, not great for stir frying at high temps with metal utensils.

Anyone who's had to pay money to replace Weber enameled steel grids with stainless or cast iron can confirm this.

I have two older style Weber enameled griddles that look new after years of use. I agree the grates tend to flake, but the griddles don't have the many sharp edges. I always used steel tools on them.

If Weber offered the ceramic tops for new grills that they sell overseas here I would buy them. They don't, so I ordered a stainless 3rd party top for the new Weber and sold the high maintenance Blackstone.
