I am a huge fan of Obsidian (https://obsidian.md/) for every day note taking and I've seen a few ways to customize it so that it gets close to Scrivener's functionality, for those interested: https://medium.com/@ricraftis/my-...45e60f1fd0
If this isn't an advertisement idk what is
Great writing tool, I use it pretty much every day. Its main advantage for me is that it has a folder system that separates out your writing from your research materials, notes, etc, plus a "card" metaphor that allows you to create outline views. (I mainly use for scriptwriting.)

Also saves edits every 2s or so, which has been handy, and if you save your project file in a DropBox or Sync folder, then you've got a pretty good almost constant backup solution as well.

Bit of a learning curve as it can do so much and is very customizable, but it has a number of templates to get you started, and there's lots of online help to get the most out of it.

My wife has been writing a novel for several years using it literally every day. She loves it. Pretty sure she got a lifetime subscription that cost way more than this too.

I've never used it. I can't say what's so appealing from her perspective, I can only say she uses it instead of Word/LibreOffice Writer, which we have too.

Does this one not require a subscription? I would love to get it for my publishing-averse wife.

Not mentioned in OP's advert for those interested: customers looking to upgrade if/when Scrivener 4 is launched will have to pay a fee.

On this same website, Stack Social, how can they be selling Microsoft Office lifetime licenses for $29?

Obligatory "sync is not backup". The changes made to the file are synced across Dropbox including deletions. I'd hate for anyone to lose data and hard work due to this assumption Smilie a backup is a spare copy of a file, preferably in a separate location. You can also learn more about 3-2-1 backups for a robust backup of your most critical data.
Technically, your synced file is backed up across multiple Dropbox servers

I use this everyday. I love it. I have separate "scrivs" for a book project, blog articles, and notetaking from books, each with their own folder system

I don't think the one we got was a subscription as much as a "lifetime membership" type thing.

It's a key not an account that requires a CC# on file or anything like that. She says you can reuse the key on multiple computers. I find that, somewhat dubious (almost certainly there is a limit) but that's what she said.

Wife said today she is supposed to be able to upgrade to this version for free. She's currently using version 1.9 and had an email from when she originally bought it saying version 3 was supposed to come out in 2018.

I haven't looked at it at all, this is entirely from me sending her a link to this earlier. I've never heard of stacksocial and don't know if their version is different somehow. It doesn't appear to be just glancing at it.

how this is different from ms word unless this helps using a.i
It's about how things can be moved around and organized mostly I think, as well as version control.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with AI (all "AI" is fake anyway and mostly glorified chatbots although some can do some impressive looking things) and a great many publishers will blacklist you for life if they catch you with AI or even think you are using it for some reason. If you're at all serious about publishing you can't stay too far away from it.
