AoE II by far is the most popular one of the series and still getting updates and going strong with the online community 20+ years later. AoE IV has a different feel to it in that each civilization feels more unique and it's more modernized in terms of graphics and UI. Each has their own learning curve but at their core they're the same as it comes down to managing economy and military. I'd say maybe watch some gameplay of each and see which you think you'd enjoy more but IMO AoE II might be the "safe" bet and you can always try out AoE IV down the road.

AOE II and III are great and hold up well in 2023. AOE III is a bit more streamlined though - recommended.

AOE II DE has the most active online players according to Steam stats - it ranks 57th on Steam in daily players.

There are other players that bought it from other stores (like Microsoft Store) which are also in the same online player pool, but those don't have public stats.

Good price on AOE2… know that the main player base is AOE2 and 4… all the others no one really follows and the player bases are small
