I've had the older revision 558's for over 10 years. I wore them almost every day until recently when I upgraded to some dt 1990s. You can take apart the earcups and remove a piece of foam to make them sound like a 598 for half the price. The headband foam is starting to peal off, but I think it's understandable for the amount of use they have had.
Do these have a cable that fits a typical 3.5mm port? If not, what type of adapter is needed?
No, they have a 10 foot cable with large adapter like you'd use in a home stereo. I bought a replacement cable for 3.5". That was several years ago but it looks like they still do this (which is strange, since the impedance doesn't require a powerful headphone amp).
I remember returning my Sennheiser 59x's and keeping a shitty 10 dollar pair of corsairs because I truly liked the way they sounded more. I just didn't like the lack of bass on any of the popular Sennheiser's people like for gaming. These might be different but that's what I tried.

How do you plug the vmoda or mod mic to this headphone I have had headsets with built in ones. This headphone appears to have a twist lock cable
Well the mod mic has its own independent wire or you could get the wireless mod mic.
