8x42 are general/wildlife/cruising/boating/everything, you only want 10x42 if you really need to "get in closer" for some reason as stability quickly becomes an issue.

Quick primer - these are roof prisms, so look for these keywords - Bak4, fully-multi-coated, phase-coated, dielectric-coated, and extra-low dispersion (ED) - in that order, for better quality on each step up. For around $100 you should be able to get up to phase-coated.

Amazon has a prime day sale on Celestron Nature DX 8x42 right now for $74, that's a steal for those. I have a set and they are easily the best value binos I own.
Check out this article. I have two pairs of the vortex diamondback. The crossfire seems like a good choice for birdwatching at an affordable price especially with the included harness. https://opticsforce.com/blogs/new...iamondback

Wish I knew enough about binoculars to know how this compares to the other Vortex binoculars deal on SD. I am looking for something for casual use and birding.

I think for casual and birding use, you'd want to stick to the smaller and lighter 8x42 option.

I purchased these binocs for the same price when they went on sale a few weeks ago. They are very good quality! The build quality seems excellent and the optics look great. The case is probably worth $30 by itself; it's excellent quality as well.

Lifetime warranty for $100? You will not find a better set with a lifetime warranty

I'm pretty sure vortex has a no bs lifetime warranty which is worth something.

Vortex warranty is worth it imo. I had a piece fall off my rangefinder and they sent me a brand new one with a free hat in just a few days. In terms of their product lines, this is toward the bottom, fwiw. Their major product line Diamondback is the next step up (~$150-$300), followed by Viper(~$300-$600), then Razor (>$1k). I have a few Viper scopes that are really good for the money. My binos are Leupold BX1s that I also paid $100 for on sale a couple years ago and would also recommend if you can find them on sale.
