Went in January. Bali is filled with obnoxious and uneducated Australians. I kinda see what Europeans and Asians mean when they say Americans are obnoxious when traveling. But man, too many Aussie morons make bali on the bottom of the list for travel destinations. Also, tons of mosquitos there also get ready for that. And bali tummy is a thing. Everyone in my group got food poisoning. Likely from the water used in food prep
Bali and US have about 12 hours time difference - almost the exact opposite (noon vs midnight) depending on where you are in the continental US.
So please allocate a few days (both in Bali and when you returned home) to adjust your body clock.
Also if you have never been to Asia before, my tips are below:
1. The most important one - never get cold drinks with ice cubes in it .. unless the seller can guarantee that the ice cubes are made with boiled water. in most of Asia, water is not drinkable from the faucet.
2. drink only known bottled water brand or boiled water. Hot tea is safe as long you do not put ice cubes in it.
3. always get freshly cooked food and only eat cooked food.

other than that, Bali is worth visiting though it will be quite a journey going there and back Smilie

The Dominican Republic will be another option. I have been to the Dominican and Bali.
Bali is more traditional (based on Hindu) - temples, paddy fields, traditional foods, cheap hotels to 7-8 stars hotels (literarily the most expensive hotels in the world).
Dominican Republic is just a short hop flight from US, more similar to US culture, food/water is generally safe, has beaches too and I found it more relaxing.

Never been to Mexico .. so cannot chime on it.
I just came back from Bali and stayed in Ubud and Uluwatu. IMO - this seems like a good deal in the dry season, and probably a meh deal in the wet season or shoulder season. We paid between $80-$150 for villas ranging from pretty nice to exceptional, so $142/night for the villa means it better be really nice. You can spend a lot more, but in Bali, once you get to 'nice hotel' price range, spending twice or three times the price is just not worth it IMO.

I pulled the trigger on this because it's refundable for 14 days (thanks OP! TU'd). Anyone have tips or advice if this is a good deal? It seems like there's a bunch of 4 and 5 star hotels for around 40-50/night.

I don't need a crazy nice hotel since this is for a brotrip.

Oh Japan, I would love to go there but in right season. Spring is probably best. Honestly you got me thinking, my problem is I have no idea where to start. I might have to check some travel packages. Thanks.

Is this an offer for a formal invite, Bro?

young couples were found murdered inside a hotel in Bali. Both were naked when they were spotted by room service. Local police officials said they were suicided. really? Some other travellers said they noticed anonymous people sneaked in the hotel room to steal when they were in the room sleeping. They pretended to be asleep, scared of being murdered, until the breaker went away. In a corrupted system where criminals are paid less attention than tourism, you are on your own.

Scary, but stuff like this happens in other countries too. It really depends on where you are staying, or who you are hanging out with. Which hotel was this, by the way?

Intercontinental. They were Chinese tourists. Interestingly, someone above mentioned Thailand being preferrable, but that seems to be far more problematic (at least for Chinese tourists):

Indonesia is actually cooler than Mexico in the summer months for what it's worth.
