I'm right there with you. I loved Dune, but the series seemed to drop in quality after the first couple books…

Messiah is very short and imo the worst of Herbert's 6

I thought God Emperor was a bit philosophical. After that, it's great again. I'm currently on The Machine Crusade (one of the prequels). Once you get past the writing style changing, it's a really good series.
