this is the best drop in upgrade for gaming pcs for those already on the am4 platform. i'd say it's not really worth the upgrade from a non-x3d zen3 (5600x, 5800x, etc), but definitely worth a consideration for pre-zen3. i also think it's not really worth it for new builds, as am5 platform is becoming more affordable and allows for future drop in upgrades.

yes, this cpu is definitely geared toward gaming. depending on your needs, zen4 (non-x3d) or intel may suit you better.
Wow. Add to this a $25 off coupon & it's easily best bang for buck.
Come on Amazon prices match.

I have this CPU paired with a 6950xt

Best gaming upgrade in a while...I think it actually made me a better player in multiplayer FPS.

Everything is butter smooth and seems my reaction time is faster so kills are easier. I'm using a 165hz panel and with this combo, it easily maintains 165 fps so that might have something to do with it
Will this 5800X3D make my GPU (2070 Super) bottleneck?

Not upgrading GPU for another 12-18 months, but this is the CPU I am going to use then, so thought maybe just get it now for an uptick in FPS,no?

U could get a 12700k around this price range. Also this doesnt support ddr5
You obviously don't know your CPUs. Even if you can find the 12700k as this price, it would be slower even with DDR5 by about 15% while using significantly more power.
https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...,4312.html

Also, using DDR5 would make the Intel build more expensive. Then, someone with an AM4 motherboard would have to purchase a new motherboard.

I wished we got a microcenter near so I can upgrade. On the other hand, if they are too close then I'll upgrade all the time. Either way, lose-lose situation. But I would love to but this cpu

How are the thermals on this? I'm currently running a 5600G paired with a Radeon RX 5700 XT, but unfortunately about the only cooler that will fit in my pc is the wraith stealth. Would that be good enough cooling for this? Or do I need to stick to my original plan of getting a 5700X.

Thanks for the post OP. Got mine in Houston this morning. There was only 1 left when I grabbed mine at opening. Last weekend there were like 8 on shelf so they're still pretty popular for those on AM4 not wanting to make the jump up.

What is your expectation of framerate, what types of games and what resolution do you play at? "Does this bottleneck xyz" is not enough information for anyone who actually intends to provide you insight, instead of their opinion of regurgitated heresay, to go off of. If I were to answer in the most broad and general sense, they pair harnoniously, but those added details would give me/others a better picture in which to help from.

There's some people that use it on the 5800X3D. But it's definitely not recommended!

I upgraded to this CPU the last time it was on sale for less than $300. I upgraded from a Ryzen 3700x which everyone seemed to agree was going to be a huge upgrade. I game at 4k with a RTX 3080, and to be honest, there is not much noticeable difference in the games I play. I realize it helps more for high frame rate and low resolution more than the higher resolution settings because I'm GPU limited. I didn't really consider that and probably could have just stuck with the 3700x and waited another generation. My boost clock did go from 4.7 to 4.8ghz, so not much faster. Yes I know IPC is faster on Zen 3, but it's just wasn't worth the upgrade for me for maybe 5-6 extra FPS.

Trying to decide if I should upgrade to a 7800x3d or upgrade my existing 5800x with this x3d. Would it be worth it? I have an asus hero crosshair vii board rtx 3090.

Using a R5 3600 now, do not get any bottlenecking at all. Play at 1440 ONLY. Most games are adventure, RPG and FPS (Oblivion, Skyrim, Halo, older COD, etc) I do not play newer games, Starfield will be an exception

I have no problem at all playing at 60 FPS on games, but get 100+ easily on things I play, some older have to be capped at 60 due to issues, you know being older games

Look into the voltage offset for this chip. It offers a significant boost to performance in many games with lower power consumption. Most people are running -25 and some -30 if stable. Also make sure your chipset drivers and BIOS are updated to what other users find as most stable or find whichever works best on your own. From a 3700x to 5800X3D you should have better gains. Are you monitoring it's boost performance and making sure it's touching 4.450 +/-?

Yea this would be a good upgrade for those (especially Starfield) which will benefit greatly from the higher Vcache from what is being said pre-release. If you install and set it up correctly it will provide a moderate boost to average FPS but more importantly a boost to 1% lows and how smooth it feels overall. It's the last upgrade on AM4 platform for gamers so my suggestion is, at this price if you have the funds, bite the bullet and do the upgrade.

This processor is only good at gaming from what i read. Trails behind in cpu against intel
Not sure on downvotes unless you weren't very specific on which intel it's against

SC to intel still and I wouldn't use this for productivity because you don't have much leeway to upgrade if it doesn't perform

3d cache is mainly marketable to those with higher end gpu that have the extra vram headroom; and it's not a cure for low vram for <8gb

Ouch, I'd highly recommend against it. The only real cooler AMD has is the Wraith Prism, everything else is subpar in my experience. I had a Wraith Spire (I think) with a copper slug in the middle and much taller than a stealth and I tried to use that on a 2700x running stock speeds/voltage and that throttled during handbrake encoding FWIW.
