Mine (of a different brand) has been functioning solid for 3 years supporting my boondocking and long road trip adventures. My advice:

1) Buy a size larger than you need. You will be pleasantly surprised.

2) Buy a fridge which either has a name brand compressor (example Secop previously known as Danfoss, LG etc) or offers 3 year or more warranty on its compressor.

3) The temperature gauge on all portable refrigerators is inaccurate because the sensor isn't actually in the cavity. Put your own thermometer inside for accurate readings.
It's a good deal, but I'd go for the 34qt one at $210 right now!
I have this exact fridge. Purchased at this price a few months back and have taken it on a few trips. No complaints, and the optional battery area doubles as storage for all the wires (just don't keep the power brick in there while it's running)

I wouldn't let it get wet like in rain, no.
Thanks for the reply. I've been leaving cold drinks/candy bars out for delivery folks but swapping the ice daily is a chore. I'll Google to see if they make one that can withstand the elements.

Is the difference between this unit and say, the $110 40qt Coleman on amazon the cooling ability? The Coleman says it will cool up to 40 degrees less that surrounding temps. I take it units like this one can exceed this? E.g. maintain 34 degrees in say 90 degree surrounding temps?

If you've got it under a porch or something that rarely gets rain except for major storms, might be OK there.

That coleman is a cooler. These are legitimate refrigerators/freezers.

Power consumption of portable refrigerators doesn't grow linearly with its volume/capacity. The difference in power consumption of a 50 qt refrigerator and that of a 21 qt refrigerator is rarely in double digits. Therefore, I can't understand why anyone would want such a small size refrigerator.

How is this for my room?

Great versatility as a freezer or refrigerator and can take with you in the car.

I picked up two of these the last time they were on sale and love "em. As the wife and I have 2 Sienna camper vans we can use one as a freezer and the other as a fridge, for about the price of my Yeti. I find the 21q size perfect for our needs and comparable to my Yeti Tundra 45 when you factor in the room the ice requires and with no watery mess.

Very versatile set-up! On my last trip my CRPRO 21 kept things frozen at 0-5 degrees despite outside temps of 90+ and inside temps well over 100. It runs quietly and doesn't disturb my sleep even when placed just underneath my bed platform. You do need to leave adequate room for intake and venting.

Despite all the frequent " sales" on the BRV site, this $170 price is as cheap as I've been able to find.

I do think it's worth the upgrade to the CRPRO models over the base models. The light is handy as are the tiedown points. Also, it's great that the last settings are stored despite any interruption in power. It doesn't default to some arbitrary setting that requires you to set it up after every power cut.

*Also to address the question above about using it in a dorm and having the flexibility to take it with you...Seems like a great idea provided this gives you enough storage. It'll hold 15 (16.9oz) water bottles.

So this would act as a fridge OR a freezer? Might jump on one. We do some trips up to disney and its nice to have a freezer for the room in addition to a mini fridge.

Millions of truck drivers use these daily. They were a game changer when they first came out and I think it was actually Coleman who started the craze. I don't know if they invented the 12v cooler but they sure did make it a thing. I remember when they first came out and they targeted long haul truck drivers first. They had these at every truck stop across the nation. Before that, truck drivers had to use a regular ice chest and buy a bag of ice every 2-3 days. So as you can imagine this was and still is a huge hit with the drivers. From what I saw back then, about 80% of long haul drivers used these.

As space is a premium in a small sleeper cab, they would not buy a bigger one. I'm guessing that even today, with multiple companies now making these, truck drivers are probably still their number one customer. The consumer market buys them now as well, but I doubt they buy nearly as many as the trucking industry.

As long as you have a way to power it, you can use one anywhere.

I have this for some years now and it's great. In the summer I keep it in my van between front seats. If you don't use it for some time it can develop mold. Just remember to clean it once in a while 🙂

The Coleman doesn't have a compressor.. this one does
