Absolutely not garbage, this is an excellent computer at this price. Would serve the vast majority of people's use cases. Though personally if I was in the market I'd buy a used M1 Macbook Air for ~$500 on eBay
Another option for the newer M2 version can be had directly at the Apple Edu store for $499 + $100 Apple gift card if you're into the ecosystem and would use the gift card, makes the current Gen model the same price:

https://www.apple.com/us-edu/shop...c/mac-mini

This would be a perfect entry level Mac for an average user. I am a long time Mac kool-aid drinker lol, but even my mid-level computing tasks are adequately served with the base model 15" MacBook Air which has the exact same specs. Runs smoother than most PCs I've used that look better on paper. I also don't play games on my Mac lol.
Some people see 8GB and immediately crap on it... this tells me they've never actually put fingers on an M1 or M2-based Mac. Simple as that. It's not like Windows where 8GB isn't enough.

This is a good deal on a nice little small form factor Mac.

Never buy 8GB non upgradable machine in 2023
Agreed. 16gb should be new minimum, even with an M1. This thing is already 3 years old...My 2 year old MBP with 16 GB purrs.

I've got one of these just sitting around. What should I use it for?

It would be a good computer for an elderly persons last decade of life, but you would be stuck explaining why it can't hold all their pictures every two months.

I found a 64GB 1TB I7 2018 for 400 after tax on Mercari. It is damn quick. Before I did that, I tried out a Studio from Costco and while it could crunch a video faster so what?? It's TB3 not TB4. But for 400 I'll take the 2018 mini over this crippled 8GB M1 any day. My old 2012 Mini has been retired.

Not sure if you're joking or not, but I have run and currently run very large projects and entire organizations this way. I was a software engineer for 15 years. I have lived and breathed computers since I was 7 (and I'm kinda old). If you can't even comprehend how anyone would ever need more than 10 tabs, no offense but your computer needs and life are probably quite simple.
Don't worry, your not alone... I often keep anywhere from 50-100 tabs open PER browser per computer with an average of 3 browsers per device. This device shows 77 in Brave, 28 in Chrome (kinda low), and 30 in Firefox.

There is probably a better way and it drives most people crazy when they see it; yet, many others get it.

The only limitation of this is on my chromebook.... It gets unhappy after like 40 - period. i5-8xx with 16GB of ram.

This is the most sensible Mac to buy in that its least prone to all of the build problems MacBooks are now known for. The problem here as with every mac in 2023 is the unrepairable engineering apple baked into this. It's really unforgivable as the company keeps bragging about it's green cred but builds unrepairable macs that wind up in landfills because every drive eventually fails. That is a replaceable part in every PC.

Yeah, because sooooo many people are just throwing out their old Macs instead of selling them for ~60-70% of what they paid for them 5 years ago.

Or maybe they have put fingers on one, and that's how they know better than to go with 8GB ;-). This coming from someone with 3x Intel Mac Minis, 1x M1 Mac Mini (8GB / 1TB), 1x 14" MBP (16GB / 1TB), 1x 16" MBP (32GB / 1TB). Even for an M1, I think 8GB is rather paltry. Maybe OK today and in 2 years time... But applications get bigger, browsers get heavier, etc. The amazing M1 will stay relevant for many years to come. I doubt 8 miserable GB of RAM will fare nearly as well.

We can pay now, or pay later, right? If we pay up today and go with at least 16GB RAM 512GB SSD, this machine will be fine for 3-5 years I'd imagine. If we cheap out and go with 8GB/256GB, I would expect to feel constrained eventually. Certainly well before the processor started to feel dated. My experience has taught me to go for more RAM and storage than I think I'll need, especially with machine that can't be upgraded.
The voice of reason. All the shills down vote anybody bashing the paid posts Lol

Heard the "apple doesn't need as much RAM" BS a thousand times, and it's simply false. My partners iPhone 14 Pro Max can only have a few apps open at a time, while my Pixel 7 can have dozens open simultaneously. Back when I owned a MacBook PRO, I had the same experience and learned my lesson.

Second, it's 2023 and we have dirt cheap Ram and SSDs; there is simply no reason to make a product with only 8 GB RAM as if we are back in 2010 when 8GB was sufficient. And a 1 TB gen 4 SSD can be purchased retail for $40, so again completely unnecessary and stupid to make such a gimped product. Shame on everyone shilling this paid post who says otherwise.

8gb is why Safari constantly reloads tabs. This is way overpriced.
Use chrome instead. You do not need to save battery life for a Mac mini.

Anyone know if this is a reliable online seller? Is the Apple product selling as a refurbished item or brand new? I remember buying this same exact model at Costco about 2 years ago for $520 plus tax. It's definitely worth it. Fast MAC Mini for everyday use...M1 chip awesome...best price I have seen ever on this product

I got the M2 with similar specs for $499 from Apple with a $100 Apple GC. That's a back to school special. If that's still available, I would get that over this since it nets out the same after subtracted the $100 GC.

PC Richard is a major electronics chain in New York and other parts of the East Coast. According to Wikipedia, It's actually the largest privately owned appliance and electronics chain in the USA. As reliable as Best Buy or other major retailer.
