I've owned the 5050UB, the 11000, and the 12000. I can only own LCD projectors as I'm very sensitive to "rainbows".

Overall a 5050UB within spitting distance of $2000 (in post covid inflationary pricing times) is a massive bang for the buck and by far the best value. Yes this projector is long in the tooth but it was so far ahead when it came out that it's still a great choice today.

The 11000 is slightly sharper but the black levels are a deal breaker. The 12000 has the improved sharpness and the good blacks but is not worth 2x the cost. The 5050 will still blow you away if you've never owned a premium (but not elite) level projector before.

Just be warned all of them are a beast size-wise.
Just a few things about this projector:

- It has a manual HDR tone map slider - HDR typically is quite dark on projectors and this helps alleviate this. The HDR tone map slider is one thing that differentiates this from epson 5040
- this projector will handle 18 gbps HDMI 2.0 for 4K 60. Epson 5040 was only 10.2 gbps interface so could only do 4k24 HDR and 4k60 with 4:2:0 chroma
- Epson projectors have advanced motorized zoom lenses with a lot of motorized frame adjust and lens memory. This is important if you have a 2.35:1 screen like I do. I press a button and the image enlarges to fit my 2.35:1 screen so I see movies like they were intended. The epson projectors are by FAR the least expensive projectors with an advanced motorized lens system like this. most cheap projectors you need to get on your ladder and adjust manually
- contrast is important for perception of sharpness. The cheap DLPs that can produce true 4k images have worse contrast ratios so many of the reviews state that these higher contrast epsons appear sharper to the eye than something like a BenQ ht3550 or ht3560
- this projector still supports 3D. LS11000 / LS12000 do not. The JVC NP5 does but that is $6k

just a few ramblings for those interested who do not want to read the 20 page reviews . . .

It's actually not 4k at all. It's double 1080p, or half the pixels (4.15 million) of 4k even when pixel shifted because it only fires twice. So it does throw up less pixels than say the DLP quad shifted 4k projectors that throw up 8.3 million pixels..

Never understood why they marketed these as 4k projectors when they arent 4k in any capacity. Just very confusing to the consumer.

A fantastic projector in almost every facet but it's not a 4k projector by any measure.

If you value "rich" colors and incredible contrast, it's worth a try. I have 1900 hours on mine purchased refurb for $2200 about 2 years ago and that bulb is still fairly bright.

I can't compare to the laser models as I've never tried one… but the refurbished price is lower than when I got it… granted this "faux K" is aged a bit. 25 feet away from screen at 130", subjectively I can't tell if it's true 4K or not… I just know the picture is detailed and contrast is very good… not 4K OLED TV good but very enjoyable. Good enough that I plan to run it to the ground before the next interesting projector technology is on fire sale.

2 year warranty. Epson gives you the full regular manufacturer warranty on refurbished projectors. You can buy one year extra for about $200

my 5040 has finally started showing lines on the screen so I'm in for one.
How old is your 5040 and how many hours until lines showed up?

Lamp life 3500 hours for a high end investment, it's a gamble.
An OEM bulb can be found for like $150. I have replaced mine twice as I use several hours daily. No issues

You can get an OEM lamp for less than a $100. Installation is probably 5 mins or less.

We had an old Epson 3500 and used it as regular TV. It took 6-7 years for us to reach 4000 hrs.
Do you have a link to OEM lamps for $100?

Could you provide the link? I haven't been able to find an OEM for that cheap

Just an FYI Epson refurb is legit. They do a great job with a projector that has an issue.

I'll never buy from Epson after a repair experience with them.

Sony is legit and stands by their products.

Showing lines already? Doesn't that scare you for a 5050UB purchase?

Not to detail the conversation, has anyone resold an older projector? If so, where? I worry about shipping on eBay. I have a 5040 I used for about a year and haven't used in 3 due to a relocation for work.

The Sony xw5000 would be another projector that is cheaper than the nz7 but outperforms this one. Of course it's still 6k for new stock.

No, Sony doesn't. They have a long history of panel degradation that leads to significantly reduced contrast, color gamut, and brightness. They have routinely denied this to owners while also saying "it's fixed in the new generation". Here's respected German dealer with their data on the matter.
http://cine4home.de/sony-sxrd-wei...ugeraeten/

The new XW series is still a bit too young to see if it suffers the same issue but there's been no negative reports so far.

Epson refurbs on the other hand aren't shining examples of workmanship. I went through 4 (including 2 new ones) before the 5th one they sent me was a good product (pj order: blue streaking, poor focus uniformity, dust blob (new), poor focus uniformity (new), good unit (received with hand signed letter of QC pass). Each one was express replaced but it took 6 months. I know another person that has a similar experience with a 5040.

Is it worth the risk or time commitment? Buyers choice. It's hands down the best projector under 4k in my opinion (I write projector reviews FWIW) so at $2100 it's a huge bargain. Just know what you may be getting into.

don't get this they never get anywhere near "lowest hours possible, or highest hours possible"

also these heavy as heck, celing mounts extra difficult (gota find a stud)

often crash or burn color tubes due to excessive lamp heat

Get LED, Laster or something that when buying a projector. ill use less watts and better product durability / longevity
Not really, have a look at LG lasers, their ones commonly report hot/stuck pixels. Seems to happen if people didn't provide extra airflow when it's hot.

The difference between laser and lamp is lightsource, and the laser light sources aren't replaceable or serviceable at all.

There's no laser projector that comes close to providing a home theatre experience as the 5050UB until you're looking at over 2x the price.

Everything laser that's not from JVC, Sony or even Epson themselves have terrible black floor and native contrast ratios.

Watching my 5030UB on a 135" screen right now which is about to celebrate its 10 year anniversary in November. Every time I think about upgrading to a 4K projector.. I still cant get over just how good this thing still looks.

I can only imagine what the 5050UB or LS12000 looks like. That said at $2,000 it's extremely tempting. Between this and the Denon 3800 AVR deals.. it might be time to go ahead and upgrade from my 1080p 7.2 surround setup.. to a 4K 7.2.2 setup with Atmos.
