If this is the same one that was $50 clearance at walmart, avoid at all cost. The battery only last 10 minutes max and now after 6 months, it only last 1 min. Waste of money.
You can't replace a battery remember for this
See my OP - $80 is about as low as I've seen it new (maybe $78 at Walmart) - new. Currently, tho, Shark.com wants $150, Kohl's $170, Amazon and Target both want $130 for new. This is $45 and gets 2 thumbs down? I'd love for the people that TD'ed this post to let me know where I can find one of these cheaper than $45... or even close to $45.

They can't.

Important note: Ignore the comments in this post about the battery not being replaceable.

One quick search and you'll find that they sell additional batteries. The black end piece you see in the pictures is actually the end piece of the battery.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you can charge a battery without it being plugged into the vac, which would have been a nice addition.

As for the vac itself: For the size, I wouldn't expect much suction power.

It might be good for crumbs and dust, but getting pet hair out of your car's upholstery and carpet is probably an exaggeration.

If you need a vac primarily for auto detailing, a shop vac with crevice attachments is the way to go. Walmart occasionally has them on sale for around this price.

I bought one of these and while it's effective, the spring is too powerful for the dust bin and it will break after a few months of use. Just FYI
Couldn't you just take the spring out or hold it while it opens so it doesn't fly out?

It may not last long, but you can also dampen these small springs by wrapping some of the coils in electrical tape.

We don't love ours, not as powerful as we had hoped. Should have taken it back to costco when we bought it

Bought used on ebay, not a reburb and it died after 1 year.

Replacement battery is $60.

The high pitched whine when the vacuum runs is unbearable.

Replaced with a Dirt-Devil handheld vacuum. Let's see how that one does.

I have this from Costco it sits unused. I grab my Dyson with attachment and go through the trouble instead. This has absolutely no suction power for even small kitchen messes. Worst purchase I've made at Costco

I love mine, bought for $99 at Target 3 years ago. Still going strong and I recently bought another for the second floor. The spring hasn't broken on mine. We use it instead of a dustpan when sweeping and my kids prefer it than getting out the canister vac for cleaning up spills.

This was CR's top rated hand vac. I bought a couple of them - one for me and gave others as gifts. It's actually the opposite of what you wrote - the suction on these is amazing - for a hand vac this size. Just note, the reusable filter requires regular cleaning or you'll lose suction and the power will shut off on the vac (due to self diagnosis of a clogged filter) in about a minute.

Did you read my OP (the original one before SD staff replaced it for Front Page)? The suction on this is great - but the filter clogs. Did you clean the reusable pleated cone filter?

Here's my OP:

This was Consumer Reports top rated handheld battery powered vac. They're pretty awesome - I bought one, new, from Costco (around $80?) and gave 2 away as gifts (one new and one refurb). So, I definitely think that CR was right. Just a note, though - if you buy one, note that the internal/reusable mini cone filter it uses does get *clogged.* I thought my Shark was bad after a few months and ended up calling the warranty team at Shark only to find out that I never cleaned the filter. Just an FYI in case you buy one and after a few months think it's not longer working. Here a quick 40 sec video [urldefense.com] that shows you how to change the filter.

Had one of these. The weakness is the battery. After a few months, it'll crap out and be beyond the warranty period.

This item comes with a 90 day Woot limited warranty, but additional 2 and 3 year protection plans can be purchased from Amazon. Just follow the link in the Woot description after buying the vacuum. I got the 3 year for $6.99 plus taxes.
Visa Card's extended warranty is 1 year, and they explicitly included refurbished items. That is good enough for me. My take on the extended warranty is that it's only worthwhile when free (or only costs me 1~2% of credit card cashback). You are better off self-insure by set aside that money in case something breaks.

That said, I sometimes have a strong feeling that something will break and feel like gambling with an extended warranty. Yeah, that's the word, gambling, for what the extended warranty actually is.

Hey, did you change the internal cone filter? I thought my batteries were bad as well after only a few months, too. Turned out that there is a self-diagnosing function where to prevent from overheating it shuts itself down after like only 60 secs even on a full charge.

Did you fully clean the filter? You might want to double check.

Here's Shark's 40 sec video on changing the filter (note that I had to modify the url as SD blocks YouTube vids):

https://youtu(dot)be/umzhQJm055A?si=kCPZXzF1krohfM7l

OR - just search YouTube for "How to maintain the Shark ION W1 Cordless Handheld Vac" and look for the 40 sec video by Shark Home

If this was the one they have in Costco.. I bought it last year and it was very good until after a few months, I had to recharge it frequently anurlhasbeenblockedre it hit 1 year old, it died completely. I wouldn't buy a refurbished version of this for this reason
