I am about 10lb under the max weight and still top out at full speed.
I was cruising around Target and they had these on clearance for $180 (down from $599). I instabought and now need to think about it. I would have posted it, but it seems super YMWV as I went to two other Targets with none and Brickseek shows no inventory and only shows a 14% discount even at the store I bought this for 70% off.

I think an 8 year old can ride this thing, especially if he has experience with scooters and hoverboards. I know some hoverboards can go up to 12mph, and they're much harder to balance on. As with driving/riding any motorized or electric vehicle, driver/rider responsibility is very important. So if you don't think he'll be zooming around in Sport mode on the streets, and you don't question his ability to ride this, then I think this would make a great gift for an 8 year old boy.
This only has a 300w motor, but the YT video said it still felt strong. It does need a kick-start to get moving, so the scooter won't zip out from under you if you press the throttle, which in some ways is a good safety feature, especially for a kid.

Lucky you. My Target had it for $299. Prices obviously differ by location. Maybe it'll drop if it stays on the shelf longer
