After buying and returning home with it, I attempted to get AppleCare but Apple's website was saying "Date of purchase could not be confirmed". Got in touch with Apple support over phone, they asked for proof of purchase, which I uploaded via the link they sent, and voila - I can now buy AppleCare, in fact I have 60 days to do so. I also have 1 year limited Apple warranty.
The laptop itself looks brand new, with no signs of wear at all. Battery cycle count is only 2. I also verified with Apple support that the MacBook was manufactured in July 2023. The box was not sealed though. Obviously, someone must have returned it for some reason.
The condition was pretty pristine. Not a single ding, scratch or nick anywhere. The battery had 2 charge cycles on it.
Getting AppleCare was a bit more complicated for me, so that's definitely YMMV. I tried to activate AppleCare, but got the same "Date of purchase could not be confirmed" error message. I used the Apple Support option and they connected me to a very polite customer service rep almost immediately. The CSR had to put me on hold several times to check if she could add AppleCare on it. She eventually said she would need to transfer me to the next tier of support. Upon attempt of the call transfer, the system hung up on me.
I called them back and got another CSR who read up on the history. The issue was that Apple is afraid of is that someone returned it to Microcenter and Microcenter is just reselling a used laptop, which would make it ineligible for AppleCare. However, the CSR's system was being glitchy, so he got annoyed with it and did me a solid and just enabled AppleCare for it.
So that's my story about getting AppleCare on a refurbished MBP 16.
