Cellular is unnecessary for 90% of users so the added cost is an absolute waste of money for most. Source - I'm a heavy phone user, got a watch with cellular and eventually disconnected the plan because it served no purpose
Purchasing from Best Buy has its advantages for those who live close enough.

Pick up in store (other similar priced options are OOS where I live).

Ship to store. No worries about it getting lost in mail, receiving an empty package, etc. (No other place near me has the ship to store option).

Trade-in credit for old Apple watch. Best Buy even gives credit for working Series 3 whereas Apple store does not. Other retailers I know of do not allow credit at all for older watches, and Apple only allows credit for the newer model watches.

Return directly to store if issue.

While it may go down a little more than this, keep in mind Best Buy allows trade-ins and pick up at store.

I have a Series 3. While you can get the battery replaced for around $80, this watch no longer gets updates. Has been a great value, and I paid this price for it 5 years ago. It is slow now though. I only use it for notifications, weather/time, pause/play, and to tap quick reply to messages. Will be a nice upgrade given the newer processor, large display, and useful health features.

The 9 basically has a better find my phone features, refined gesture (accessibility allows a similar action in older model watches capable of updates), brighter display, more memory, and updated processor. Love the new pink option and to buy with the Apple band of my choice! I think the x might even be a bigger update because it will be a ten-year edition, but some people need the watch now.

It is likely the glucose monitor feature will have to work in conjunction with an RX device like Dexcom. The blood pressure feature would be cool; I would have opted for the 9 if it had this feature. I don't know what else they could add.
Agree with cellular being unnecessary.

But the stainless steel models with the Sapphire crystal vs aluminum with glass for the regular models is a huge difference.

Would it be worth it upgrading from series 6?
Nope. Viewable screen is a tad bit bigger, but that's about it.

I can imagine the difference for sure, but for a watch that would be outdated in a few years, not sure if I still want to wear a slow but nice watch by then. The same goes for the ultimate version see now after a year the 2nd gen came out better already. But then for those who has the means to get a nicer watch by all means that's great!

Tell that to the guy who was kayaking and got swept away by the current… used his cellular Apple Watch to SOS for help.

No I don't. Please enlighten how percentages apply to the kayaking guy example.

Because cellular applies to just kayakers? There's numerous scenarios where you would want your Apple Watch to have access to cellular data.

I stop buying cellular version of iPad and Apple Watch because I noticed that batteries drain so much faster when compare to the Bluetooth version. I am in the 90% camp. If I go kayaking or hiking in the mountains, I would carry a satellite phone, not a cellular enabled watch with only limited cell range.

Because that's exactly what OP's 10% was meant to cover.

Apple watches didn't broadcast heart rate to PC apps like Wahoo SYSTM or Zwift. Did that change?

I'd like cellular so I can walk/run or work out at the gym (music, audiobooks, messages) without taking my phone. I'd guess a good number of people would enjoy a similar use case. But def agree it's a question of value given the extra upfront and ongoing cost.

no. I think 6.7.8 are basically the same internally. or maybe just 7 and 8. From the 6 only the 9 is worthwhile upgrade IMO

Depends what you use them for I guess. I'm still on the series 4. It still gets the updates and functions like day one. The only reason I'm looking to upgrade is that the battery is just about done by now.

Carriers can offer decent deals for cellular versions to make it worthwhile over the GPS version.
I got a series 6 a little over 2 years ago via VZW so slightly before the the 7 came out because I had VZW credits expiring in June of that year which I then combined with the watch already being discounted plus a promo they had for $150 off. They somehow let me stack all of that. after monthly credits I paid $2/month for the watch and the $5 for service. That was a slick deal that I doubt i'll be able to replicate. Did I need the cellular? no. Did I use it? Maybe a handful of times.I'd still take that deal again because in the end I paid $168 for a $530 device
