But to the thread topic and Kauai: it has its share of consumerism, as well as abundant nature - as do Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. One can find it enjoyable to shop at Costco, Safeway or Tommy Bahama, grab food or drinks at Starbucks or Duke's, *and* appreciate the natural wonders of the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon and elsewhere. These are not mutually exclusive.

If you love nature, scenery in movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lost, Jurassic Park, and The Descendants, uncrowded beaches, and the absolute best ice cream I've ever had in my life (I eat an illegal amount of it) - then get your butt to Hawaii on this deal.
Don't look now, but the Costco in Lihue apparently sells poke, macadamia nuts and surfboards. The horror. Bring a towel to wipe up all that appropriism.

I didn't say any of those restaurants are examples of cultural appropriation.
But they are cringe places tourists eat at, period. Much more so when America's obesity epidemic swarms.
What other words would you like to put in my mouth? 🤭

Kauai does have some pretty scenery, but there are reasons those beaches aren't crowded (besides the fact that most of them are solid rock). The entire island has the population of a small exurb in Ohio.
Kauai is nice for beaches and hiking, and, apparently judgmental people who like resort-filled islands but hate tourists. Not much else going on there.

Costco's poke is god awful. Please don't waste your money
