I bought a couple of off-lease Lattitudes 8 years ago. One is still OK (but I mothballed it a year ago, replacing it with a more modern laptop) and the other one, which I bought for a tech-clueless relative living in another country, just recently bit the dust on them (probably it's HDD failure that can be fixed, but it's obsolete anyway so they are getting a 5411 as a replacement).

If you run excel that hits the row limit of a million. I've never seen an excel used by mere mortals exceeds 16GB limit though.
Chrome now has a memory preservation feature to deactivate tabs when not in use to cut down on memory hogging too.

The 5000 and 7000 series will give you 3-5 years of problem free.
Make sure to test the battery health, keyboard, trackpad, usb, ethernet port. 30% of these laptop have hardware issue, half have under 80% battery health left. Most issues spotted in 15-45 days.
The only thing notice is 8gb to 16gb, 200% speed improvement. Or if you're playing 8k video.
In 2016 I built a new desktop with an Intel Core i3-6100 (2-core weaksauce), with 64GB of RAM. I have upgraded the processor twice since then (Ryzen 2600, then Ryzen 5600), but I have not had to get new RAM, and I have *never* had a problem with running out of memory. Sure, in 2023 the DDR4-2400 isn't particularly *fast*, but I won't run out of memory until my next CPU upgrade when I will need to upgrade to DDR5. That (*counts on fingers*) seven-to-ten years makes the most memory you can possibly afford, a worthwhile investment.
FWIW, that's also the biggest problem I have with most premium laptops nowadays - the memory is embedded or soldered, so there are *no* upgrades, and they don't come with nearly enough, and there's never an option for 64GB or 128GB up-front. If you were spending $2K on a laptop, it would be worth it to add an extra $500 or $1000 to get 64GB or 128GB of memory, for pure longevity.

It's suppose to be cosmetic grade B but I don't see any sign of use on this. There is a tiny blue marker about 2mm long and some very slight wear on the silver color around the edges and that's it. Having worked in IT for 25 years and I am pretty familiar with typical wear you'd see on laptops in places such as palm rest, spacebar, track pad and its buttons, and the eraser mouse. It's almost as if this thing was carried in a bag and never actually used.
