So when your laptop connects to this via wifi and does that use hotspot data or mobile data? I have heard the phone companies keep track by internet hop count. So does it alter the hops?

I don't know exact answer, but it's OpenWrt, supposed to be doable...

Considering that 5G phones can be had dirt cheap now, I find it strange that 5G routers and 5G usb modems are still ridiculously expensive.

Different use cases. Better cooling and antenna on routers. These also have Ethernet jacks that phones do not have. I'm considering picking this up for travel.

I have this one, use it for camping. Works great, and it is very customizable. I have changed the TTL settings to make it "look" like the data is phone usage to the provider. I've actually been using a donor phone (my son's old Pixel 6 pro) for the sim card, and it USB tethered to the router. All data usage shows up as normal cell phone data when I looked at the account.

This router also has a micro SD slot that I have a bunch of movies and shows loaded on, so I can stream when/if we don't have service somewhere.

Cons for this model are the built in memory (don't remember how much but it's ridiculously small). There are tons of "apps" (OpenWRT stuff mostly) available to install on it, but the damn thing runs out of memory fast. I lost the DLNA player when I added the app to change the TTL settings.

All that said, I'm looking to upgrade to a 5G router like this, so I can eliminate the phone part of this setup. GL has a new model (GL-X3000) which has much newer tech (5G, way faster processor, more RAM, etc.) but its pretty pricey...$550 ish most places. Of course there is the nighthawk m6 pro small hotspot, but it's not nearly as powerful and is still expensive.

I'm pretty sure I've decided on the Cudy P5 model. It's basically a home style router (multiple antennas, snapdragon X62, etc) with 5G radios in it. It is also able to "repair" the IMEI in it (think tablet plans here 😁) and they are going for around $350 ish on fleabay...

Thank you for your suggestions!
I just checked the GL-X3000 on Amazon and it's currently $519 and you can use a $50 coupon to get an additional discount. So it's not too bad at all.

The Cudy P5 which you pointed out is a very cool 5G device. But the $549 price tag seems high.

Do you mind sharing which TTL setting app do you use? Just PM if mods don't permit the mention of the app. BTW, I am on T-Mobile and not sure if there is such a TTL setting app which works optimally with T-Mobile.

Not as elegant a solution using just SIM cards; I currently have an ASUS RT-AC68U which I just do a USB 2.0 tether to a 5G phone device.

I am still trying to find a cheap Wifi router product that has two maybe three USB ports which allows multiple 5G phones to be tethered to, and have USB port link bonding/ aggregation capability. Example, the device might look like this, multiple USB ports that allow multiple phones to be USB tethered or USB cellular modems: https://www.starwaveglobal.com

If you know of any such product, pls do share!

Anyone know if this would work with a AT&T data only SIM Card like you'd have for a Tablet, or does it have to be AT&T IoT SIM Card specifically?
