For those who are unfamiliar with the Shimoda brand, they make the best adventure/travel photography bags out there. I own two bags from them and would never buy from another company ever again. This is a killer deal and on their newer line of Explore bags. Last time it went on sale with the core unit, I paid $279.90 so this is the lowest price ever seen brand new. If you pay using the B&H PayBoo card, you can save on the tax. Grab yours while the deal last.

Not sure why the downvotes. I got one of these bags (mirrorless version) a few months ago and it is top notch.

If you're in the market for a bag to protect your expensive equipment, this is it

Ah darn it... I literally just opened x30 3 min ago. I would've gladly returned mine for this

Edit:
I got Action X30, but this following information should apply to Explorer 50 too.

You can remove the internal aluminum frame to keep the height of the backpack shorter. Taking off the frame takes like 30 seconds by hand. Putting the internal frame back in with a round edge prying tool (tip of toothbrush by Shimoda's demostration) takes about 1-2 minutes. It also can be done by hand too, but it's a little bit more difficult.

This way, you can try to fit the backpack under the airplane seat as a person item depending on the airline and your situation. Some people remove the internal frame to fit it under the seat and just put the frame in the carry-on. This way, you have take the Shimoda backpack as the personal item and a carry-on without having to check the bags.

To provide more info, for the case of action X30, the exterior dimension is 19.7" in height by the manufacturer's spec. With the internal frame removed, the height can go all the way down to about 17.5". The minimal height of the backpack without internal frame is now limited by the height of the padding on the back. I am not 100% sure for what the exact dimension for Explorer 50 without the frame would be, But, I believe Explorer 50 may fit in under the seat for some airline.

There was enough interest in this topic from Shimoda community. The designer of Shimoda himself demonstrated how to remove the internal frame on their official Youtube channel. Hopefully this helps anyone out there trying figure things out with backpack sizes with their upcoming trips Smilie

Edit2:
Wow that sold out quick

Where did you buy the Action X30? If it was from B&H, they should allow you to return it. Not surprised it sold out so quickly. It's the largest volume of the Explore V2 series and best price I have seen so far.

I own the Action X50 as my all purpose/local bag and have this one so the airlines don't give me problems when traveling. Top notch material and excellent bag.

Thank your for the comment!

I bought it 2 days ago. X30 ($200) and X70 ($230) 1st gen was on clearance sale before getting discontinued on B&H. They do not include the cube cores.

B&H has restocking fee for opened product apparently and return shipping fee of about $10. I saw this post immediately after opening mine and removing the tag. After leaving my initial comment, I decided to stay with action X30 as I like the roll-top feature. And, the Explorer 35 was already sold out soon afterI left my comment. LOL

Extremely good deal IMHO. Would've jumped on it at a heart beat if it wasn't for my current situation Smilie Thank you for posting either way.

You'll like the X30 in the long run. While the explore series is a refined bag, it's somewhat restrictive in terms of extra space when needed. I can't tell you how many times the roll top on the X50 came in handy. It's useful to dump a bunch of gear and take it to your destination to unload like a hotel. Plus the volume exceeds the 35 with the roll top anyways. I always found it strange that when you compare the explore to the action series, the explore weights more. I prefer the action x v1 over v2 because of the extra weight the v2 has now. Anyways you made a good choice.
