I have a basic (may be even a dumb) question to some of the audiophiles out here.

Most of the content I consume is through online streaming (Netflix, Prime, Disney+, etc.) whose audio is either in standard 5.1 or occasionally Atmos (which is probably also 5.X.Y mostly). If the source content is primarily only 5.X(.Y) channel, how do these 9.X.Y systems (or for that matter, Samsung's other 11.X.Y soundbar system) utilize these additional 4 of 6 channels? Do they stay quiet? Replicate the same sound across the remaining channels? Or is there a more sophisticated / algorithmic way that sound is transmitted to the remaining speakers to utilize these additional channels?

The better units (like this one) have an upmixer setting, they call it adaptive on this model….it basically creates additional surround sound and height effects from 2 or more channel sound sources. Depending on the mode it works very well and utilizes all the speakers.
There are also pure modes which use only the extra speakers intended, and a mode which sends the front channel sounds to the back…more of a "stadium" type of effect.
Speaking of this bar, I just listened to it yesterday at bestbuy and it was incredible. This unit has speakers on the sides of the bar and top which really increase the soundstage. Have not heard anything which had such a wide soundscape, even bose or sonos…but those bars are very expensive - certainly great also.
I dont have good room for surround speakers behind the couch and have a 2 story living room. for me the samsung with these side speakers is a great solution as it really fills the room with sound from everywhere with those added side speakers. Atmos doesnt work above in my application due to height, but it definitely still fills the front room more and reflects off the tv. Sound is certainly more like the height of the tv, not the soundbar.
Also note This unit can also the rears in the front as an option.
I actually just did the 900c + wireless kit, which is the same bar but slightly bigger subwoofer. There is a slickdeal for it with educational (EPP) discount if you can get access to a student email. It is about the same price ($610 total) if you can score the wireless speaker kit open box at bestbuy. Otherwise it would be more expensive
This 930 itself is a beast…I'd certainly jump on it at this price if I couldnt get the 900 deal (EPP discount)
