EDIT 10/14: Coupon is no longer there. This (original post) is now clearly the better deal. 🙂

The other big competitor for cheap recert storage, GoHardDrive also has had them listed lower lately, but many people (including myself) won't go with them again due to horrible issues with their quality and customer support.
Personally I have 40+ drives in production right now from SPD, the oldest of which being just over 2 years of powered on time, not a single failure as of yet.

Theoretically, each additional platter and head increases the chance of a head crash, surface going bad, etc. but drive reliability has increased to the point it likely doesn't matter. Also, the X18 version will use slightly less power since it has one less platter to spin.
Both the X18 and X20 have the same areal density of 1146Gb/in2 and 482 thousand tracks per inch according to the same user manuals. Therefore, both should perform about the same, although it is possible the X20 firmware is more refined and optimized.

Acoustics, Idle (typical, measured in Idle 1 state) 28 dBA
Acoustics, Seek (typical) 30 dBA
They are certainly louder than 5400 rpm WD REDs but not significantly so.
So these batch won't be the normal retired products from data centers as usually HDDs will at least be used for 3-4 years.
So it will be either batches of common quality issues callback or products before free return period. The later case will be a steal but the first case can be a risk.
Anyway, the price and the density is super attractive. I might considering buying a pair to try the luck(I hope it is due to the second case).
