I have BitDefender now; I find it annoying at times because of the inability to turn off some of the pop-ups (I've spent a lot of time configuring it, and read a lot about how to configure it; certain things just can't currently be done - despite the fact many people have requested some of these features at BitDefender).
I think in terms of protection, they're probably both near the top.
Is Eset less annoying? Is it user friendly?

Between ESET and Bitdefender, Bitdefender has much better malware detection technology and scores proving as much in many years of 3rd party lab testing. ESET doesn't try to upsell you though by default like BD until you disable the notifications. Their client is a bit lighter on resources but the advanced settings can be confusing to nontechnical users.
I'm talking more about the pop-ups that you get for some sites (safeway dot com used to always generate them). They were annoying because not only did they interrupt you, you also had to click on them to make you go away. I want BitDefender to run in the background without interrupting me - I don't need to be told it's protecting me.
I moved away from an area where there's a Safeway so I'm not dealing with them now. At the time, there was no setting to tell BitDefender to operate silently, without the pop-ups despite there having been many many requests on the BitDefender forum for this to happen. I doubt it's happened yet.
Another thing is when Wi-Fi security is run, BitDefender tells me there's a (low) risk because it says there's no password on my Wi-Fi. That's absolutely wrong - it's password protected. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what it was getting at - couldn't find any decent explanation online from BitDefender as to why I was getting that message.
My gripes about BitDefender have to do with it being somewhat unfriendly to the user - these are just a couple of the examples. (Yes, it could be worse, I'll agree to that.)
Given the size of the company, you'd think they could improve these kinds of things fairly easily (especially since many people have flagged various problems for them), but they haven't.
If the program generates messages that people learn over time are meaningless, people may end up ignoring important messages on critical issues.
