Routers use multiples more power than a basic switch. For something that probably runs 24/7 it can make a difference. I would guess it would pay for itself in 1-2 years in energy savings. Plus smaller footprint, quieter, etc.

Not enough cheaper than a metal tp-link to really consider. I do have an old 100mbps rosewill that still works afaik, it's been in a drawer for 10 years.

Finally donated a bunch of older network gear to goodwill. Kept two small 10mb hubs for the memories of CSMA/CD!

I'd say that two hubs are still useful for sniffering if your switch doesn't support port mirroring.

We can't all use your retired router. You're gonna have to choose one person and mail it to them.

I had the v1 of this switch. Worked fine for a couple of years and then started freezing up and had to be unplugged/replugged once or twice a day. Not as reliable as the Netgear and TP-Link 8 port switches that are always on here.

OOS at Amazon. Third party direct available at a higher price. Other options still work at the $9.99 price.

And also not enough ports. 5 port switches are almost instant e-waste in my experience, as capacity is often quickly exceeded. A 5 port switch has 3 ports occupied out of the box, leaving 2 ports for expansion which are often quickly used up. 8 port minimum IMO, which saves a second future purchase.
