It isn't, to be fair, when going 1-2 size up. 6'3" ft 280 overweight here. I got me 1-2 size up than my actual size and it doesn't feel tight at all as it doesn't even sandwich my calves. It is true to size however above is my hack along with a belt so it worked out!

There are other fits. If you're worried about that then the straight taper should be fine. The athletic fit works best for me as they're looser in the thighs and slimmer around the calves. I'm wearing a pair right now.
I don't know how tight of a fit you got but I have the athletic fit ones and they fit like the Levi's 541 equivalent. They just stretch allowing for better range of motion. The only similarities to leggings are that they stretch and they're pants. They're still denim.
