It's worth noting that Christmas/New Year times are available. I see fares leaving December 23 returning December 31.

You'll want a longer trip than that probably. From what I've read one should plan two weeks in New Zealand.

Agreed. I did 2 weeks last time I went and it was a good amount for both North and South island. But these particular dates (even though only a week) fall into most people's work/school holidays so going anywhere, for this price, is a steal since time off is usually taken care of.

If anyone does go, I would recommend only sticking to one island (either North of South).

You'll need a NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) visa. It's basically a straightforward $17 visa to get on their app. Must be done at least 72 hours in advance. It's more or less automatically granted unless you have some country entry restrictions or have a background issue (typically criminal).

I don't have a firm number for you because I didn't keep a spreadsheet but over 14 days, it was probably about $5/6k for 2 people. I only stayed in Marriott/Hiltons (status) which averaged $200 USD a night. The rest is really dependent on how you plan to eat and what you want to do. There's a lot of free things like hiking or sightseeing. Or if you go visit Hobbiton, Waitomo, Milford Sound boat tours, etc, those things will impact the overall cost.

Actually just did this yesterday and got approved within minutes. So, YMMV. Supposedly cheaper through app too.

Book these cheap flights, spend a few days in NZ and then hop a flight to Rarotonga for a week or so and back to NZ. It's a pain to get to Rarotonga now that they don't do the direct flights from LAX anymore. You have to go through Honolulu or NZ.
