I've been using one for about a year, it's never even come close to falling off and breaking my phone. It is a very strong magnet.
These are the old ones. Magnet is strong. Used it on S23U with a "magsafe" case. Never had issues with phone or grip falling off. The S23U is a brick of a phone. The new version of this is a circular sized grip versus oval.

I bought this from a previous deal @ $15, and it is well worth it. I had wanted a Pop-Socket for the convenience, but didn't like the idea of sticking something permanently to my case. This is a great solution. The instructions tell you to it attach to a case, and not directly to the phone, but AppleInsider says they used it that way for weeks without any effect on the iPhone. How strong is it? I think the point of pop socket is you can grab on to it without fear of slipping off. I would be paranoid of the magnet slipping when active

Stupid question. Do I have to be a Verizon member to order?
No. It may prompt you when you proceed to check out asking if you are a new or existing mobile customer (it did for me). I just chose new customer and proceeded through the checkout process with no further mobile account-specific questions asked.
I'm a Verizon customer. When I added this to my cart, price dropped to $4.49! I checked why, and there was a $7.50 discount labeled as "ECPD." Not sure where that came from. I recently upgraded my phone, so perhaps that why? At any rate, I was happy to see the extra discount. $4.80 with tax + free shipping.

So this looks very similar to the issues Verizon had a few weeks back with certain MagSafe accessories and headphones/bluetooth speakers being discounted 75%-100% off. For that one, Verizon ended up "fixing" the glitch after a few days and cancelled the majority of orders and recalling some that had shipped out (though some guys here on SD did actually hardcore lockout and got free or stupidly cheap chargers, AirPods, JBL speakers etc..). I wasn't lucky on that one as they cancelled everything I put through.
Anyhow, that's very much what appears to be happening here. AS with last time, to get the excess discount like you (and I) did, you must go to the product page and add however many you want to your cart, tell it you're a new or existing customer and THEN sign in and check out immediately. If you add, remove or change qualities on ANYTHING, or sign in before adding to cart, the pricing will revert back to what it is supposed to be. I was able to order 3x of the Blue Nebula MagSafe PopSockets this way for $4.49 each as well (Totaling $13.48).
Not gonna hold my breath that I actually get them, but what the heck worth a shot! Even $11.99 is a good price compared to what these normally sell for ($29.99 which is insane lol). I bought a few of the graphite ones for $14.99 each at BestBuy last month on sale and my wife and I love them! Gonna give her these and reclaim the carbon fiber ones from her lol. They stick very well, so I use mine in bed for watching YouTube and reading and she's had her's on her phone every day except when on the MagSafe charger at night. Works great if you use other MagSafe accessories and don't want a popsocket semi-permanently stuck to your phone or case!
