Each piece of 23kg luggage check in is $59, a meal is $10, a carry on is $41. If you 2x check in + 2 meals + a carry it is $179 each way. $785 round trip. I don't see Singapore airline going for this price.
United has a sale for $680, so I agree if you do need that much check in/carry on you should probably pick United.
I'm not sure if this helps but, this flight goes into Narita Airport. Which will add time it takes to get to central Tokyo, by public transportation or a really expensive taxi ride. There are two airports that serve Tokyo, Haneda and Narita. Haneda is closer to central Tokyo.
Exactly. They nickel and dime you for stuff that comes standard elsewhere. It works for some, but I like to be able to pick my seat, eat 2 full real meals, carry bags onboard, check extra bags, etc. for my 11-12 hour flight. By the time you add all of those things, you're paying the same as Singapore Airlines for a budget airline

Got notifications that some of my other tracked ZIPAIR flights dropped too. One was a SFO-NRT RT flight in November that dropped to $568. Some others were the SJC-NRT RT flights in March that dropped to $509.
price is good only if you can travel lite and bring you own snacks/meal. every little things add up, meal, carry on fee, luggage allowance.

Lovely airline, highly professional. What you'd expect from Japanese customer service. The in-flight meals and snacks were phenomenal and very inexpensive. I'd fly again in a heartbeat just for the experience.

Flew with them last month on this flight. Nice new planes but we didn't pay for seats and was given a non-reclining seat both ways. Wasn't as bad as I imagined and would do again for this price.
However I know someone who used them last year and Zip Air cancelled their return flight and so they had to spend $$$ with another airline since Zip Air would only offer them a return flight a few days later.

It adds maybe 45 mins at most... Hardly a big deal after a 12hr flight.

It's certainly not 45 minutes "at most". In some cases, commuting from NRT instead of HND is 90+, and the train transfers with luggage can be a pain in the ass if you don't pay to ship your bags into the city.
I'd rather fly to Haneda, but the convenience usually comes at a cost premium since HND is at capacity.

Luggage can be a deal breaker. And they weigh personal items. But onboard snacks and drinks are very reasonably priced (really not much more than you'd pay for the same stuff at a convenience store in the U.S.). The food sucks, though (best option is the instant noodles), so I'd recommend taking your own, anyway.
And expect to get a middle seat if you don't pay for selection.
