We ordered 3 iPhone 12 from boost they all arrived unlocked. YMMV
I ordered another one (before the price went up) in the hope of getting an unlocked 12. No luck for me! SIM restricted.

I'm not even going to activate it. Did someone on here say they got a refund on an unused plan? It seems like a long shot, but would love to know the details.

Yes, what you describe is possible. You can buy the upgrade but keep using your current phone. Your spouse can then sign up for a new plan using the "bring your own phone" option and then just use this new iPhone 12 as the phone.
Do you know if the iphone 12 will unlock one year after doing this?

I purchased about 5 5gb 3month plans on sale at best buy and its been a little more than a year with switching those active sim cards into my phone without letting time lapse and it has not unlocked.

I'm not saying I expected it to but I did have hope. I have one sim card left to activate and if it doesnt activate after that, I may try a yearly plan to see what happens. Im only considering this because the service is now tmobile on the backend and I can tolerate that over sprint which is what boost mobile use to be.
