It's essentially a remake of the 1999 Playstation 1 game and updated to include new elements for it. Played the OG and the PSP version. The EN voices are from the PSP version.

If you enjoyed the original, or the PSP remake, this feels like a more complete vision. This has:
  • Added QOL improvements for skills and abilities (combat no longer stops for spells; no cooldown for spells)
  • Fast travel has been added
  • Most PAs have voiceovers
  • Added additional overworld discoveries (items and "bosses")
  • All maps were reworked for exploration in 3D
  • Shows presence of PA/interaction on fast travel menu
  • Transparency on which PAs are timed (shows on fast travel menu)
  • Quick change in and out of PA mode in towns
  • Huge translation and naming fixes
  • New character artwork (you can switch to the PSX or PSP version as well)
  • Visible encounters
Just to name a few that I feel make the game more enjoyable overall.

I'm just now playing The Divine Force on PS Plus, and I'm finding it quite enjoyable. I know I vaguely remember playing a Star Ocean game back in the day, and I'm wondering if it was Second Story. Does your character say something when he levels up in this one?

look up FF5/6 complaints when they remade the character sprites(online polls were 90% in favor of the original sprites), square tried to avoid that backlash(they delisted FF5/6 from even being bought, backlash was that bad). konami are also remaking suikoden and leaving the character sprites untouched from the original

This game has 97% positive on Steam right now with 900+ reviews. It's an amazing remake. Runs at 164 fps @ 4k on my setup and it's just smooth as hell. The pixel characters are a bit jarring compared to the backgrounds but it's an intentional design choice. If the Dragon Quest 3 remake ends up looking like this I'll be extremely satisfied.
