Don't purchase it. Read the fine print the utility company has the right to then adjust your settings on hot days at peak times.
it's noted in the deal text which deals with which providers require enrollment in the thermostat management program. in the vast majority of cases enrollment is not required. in many cases, if you enroll, you can get the device for free or nearly free, but if you are willing to accept a worse price ($40 for google nest in my case instead of $0 or $5 in some other providers' cases) you don't have to enroll in the energy management program. you would have to opt-in to it, they don't just suddenly take control of your thermostat without your consent. plus, even if you do enroll to get the device for cheaper, you can opt-out whenever you want. a lot of unnecessary fear in this thread.
$0 for me ended up being $15 after tax and shipping.

Socal gas customer, they charged $10 for shipping as well as $15 in tax. Not bad but not as slick as it seems

I've had both the learning and the regular, I have to say the learning feature is good in the sense when I feel it gets too hot the AC turns on intuitively. With that said, I can easily tell my google home to turn on the AC.....I would say you're mainly paying for cosmetics at this point.

I've always passed on these deals. Nothing like the power company telling you what the temperature in your house is going to be and you have zero control over it.
