Regardless of it being free on cable or On Demand, there are some that don't have cable nor On Demand available to them. I do have cable and still own this as it looks great in 4K and hate commercials. To each their own, but just because it's on cable doesn't mean people want to sit through all the commercials.
Maybe they want to watch it before Christmas? Maybe they want to own a holiday movie that they really like? And all for only $8.50?
So do you go threadcrap EVERY deal that you don't want to get in on? Don't know why you care how people can possibly go throwing their money around like this. Isn't there an Apple thread you can go to and tell them how to spend their money?

If it's the best price for an item, whether it interests you or not, it is at least a candidate for FP.

Why...why are people buying a movie that is played over and over again every Christmas....for FREE.

How is the a FP? We really need to sort out the peeps who flag posts as being FP. This is not FP worthy.
Maybe they don't have cable? Even if they do, I can guarantee you the version airing for FREE certainly doesn't look or sound as good as the very highly regarded 4K transfer on this disc.

4k didn't exist when this movie was made. It was shown on a tube tv.

Since when did you become the decider of what is a candidate for FP? Why are you here threadcrapping on my threadcrap?
I never made any claim to know what deserves to be on the FP... you're the one who brought this up and said definitively that this item didn't deserve to be on the FP. I said it is at least a "candidate", which is a different and less all-encompassing thing, whether you are capable of noticing the difference or not. And in case you somehow hadn't caught on, it's generally the best price for an item that is a prerequisite for something being on the FP, not whether or not YOU think it's stupid to spend the money. Whether it then makes it to the FP or not is up to the mods and in many cases what kind of kickback they're getting for promoting it. laugh out loud

What does this have to do with how people are now viewing it 40 years later?

And to be more accurate "when this movie was made" it wasn't shown on a tube TV. It was shown on a movie screen, and then tube TVs later.

Watched this movie for the first time last December and was not blown away, unlike others and the many friends who were shocked that I had never seen their beloved movie. I don't get it, but I can understand that it may be tied to a fond memory or family tradition. This is FP because many people have given it a thumb 👍. Sure, you can watch it on cable or whatever, but sitting with friends and / or family and popping in a flick that you all enjoy is well worth the $8.50. No commercials, pause to get more snacks or a bathroom break, and great picture and sound are all reasons to purchase this movie. I'm going to pass on this deal but will give it a 👍 because it's a good price for those who love it.
I don't get it either. Black Christmas, this guy's other film, is way better. That said, Black Christmas made me understand why A Christmas Story often feels "weird."

I don't understand your argument. This movie was shot on 35mm film which has proven to translate very well to the 4K format as long as the original film elements are in decent shape and the studio handling the restoration knows what they're doing. Warner Bros can be hit or miss, but they did a fantastic job with this release last year and you'd be a fool not to pick this up at $8.50 if you enjoy the movie. Even if you're not set up for 4K, the included standard blu-ray is simply a downsampled version of the new 4K transfer and is miles ahead of the awful looking blu-ray we got in 2008.
