Based on my price research, this looks like the lowest price offered on this item.

Bad waffle makers are bad. I'm not saying this one is, but from buying a few, the ones that can flip and lock are going to give you the best waffles. I had a flip oster one that I bought from Amazon warehouse that was only a little more expensive than this and it was great.

Flip and lock are big and cumbersome. Also takes more work as you have to flip it. This makes does not require this, and will give consistent even golden color on both side. Then it folds together and can be stored away. What more do you need?

One that makes good waffles. The reviews on this thing once you get past the shills. If you really like waffles, spend $50 on a good one. If not go frozen and don't get Amazon's piece of electronic waste. These do not cook evenly, are a mess to clean, you'll end up with overcooked on the bottom and undercooked on the top.

why does it need to be flipped when both sides cook the waffle?

I think gravity? I don't know for sure, but I always find they work better with my flippy one vs the one at my parent's house that doesn't flip.

unless the top squishes your batter into the grooves (or you have really thick batter) you'll only be cooking half a waffle since the batter would overflow out.

i've found the flip-style especially with removable dishwasher-friendly plates to be the easiest to use and clean up. The fipping style I use seem to ensures both heating plates are coated by the runny batter with potentially a nice airpcket in each waffle section. Then just pop out the plates and toss into the dishwasher for quick clean up.

The best waffle makers are the ones you can easily clean, period. I'm no waffle connoisseur but cleaning keeps me from using it.
